Hola
Hope all is well with you guys. Things are going well for me just busy with school and work. My DEX update isnt going to be as good as the news alex gave everyone. I have emailed my personal contact at KPMG (an accounting firm in Detroit) about a possible speaking engagement with DEX about their marketing schemes. I have yet to hear a response, however I am going to touch base with them next week. Other than that, alex and I are waiting for a contact inside Google so we can schedule an event hosted by them. Also now that the Wings season is over (what a sad way to end it) i am going to touch base with Eric Freiny, my wings contact, very soon and see if he has an idea for when he will have the Red Wings Career Day.
Finally, Alex and I were brainstorming possible event ideas for the month of october, besides our sports marketing event. Alex and I both thought that DEX should host a resume, cover letter, and internship search seminar in either late september or early october for its members. Since there is a career fair in October, we thought it would be beneficial if we prepared our members to land themselves the best possible internship. It would be kind of like an insider information to getting the best internship and also what avenues students can take to seek that great internship. Lynne and Kay would be able to help us with this event seeing as how Lynne works in the career center and has a strong understanding on how to perform the internship search and prepare students for job interviews. Kay has a strong knowledge of public speaking skills and how to present yourself in an appropriate manner that would make prospective employers like our DEX members. If we combine both of their skills into one event I think it would be beneficial to our students. Especially if we hold an event like this earlier in the year this way it gives our members an edge over other organizations on campus and its career outreach events. Let me know if this is a good idea and I can go ahead and speak to Kay and Lynne and see if they would be interested in being our speakers for this event. It would be again at the end of september or beginning of october and only open to our DEX members.
Take Care. Enjoy your summer.

AS UD PD - 6/15
(Alex Stuessy, Update, Professional Development)
Salutations!
PD is moving forward on all fronts, so I will get right to it. I recently received confirmation from Ella Arroyo from Target that they will be our opening speaker for the year on 9/23/09. Although Ella will not be speaking herself, she said that she will let us know who will be speaking on behalf of Target as the date approaches. Regardless we should be very excited to have such a reputable brand as our kick-off. The speakers will be potentially addressing the following:
-Target is known for unparalleled branding: How does branding work on a local level in your experience in comparison with the national
approach?
-Similarly, to what extent does corporate guide/dictate marketing on
the local level? What types of promotions, or interactive initiatives are done in-store?
-What type of community events does Target sponsor on a local level;
what type of out reach programs are occurring right now? Can our
students get involved?
-What types of internships does Target offer; what advice would you give our students to gain a competitive edge? Depending on the speaker we hope to have the representatives collect resumes/cover letters for those interested.
Secondly, Emily Shahady has also confirmed her availability to speak to DEX on 11/11/09. She was a big hit last year and I am personally very excited to have her back again. She is flexible in terms of the content of her speech; these are the ideas we sent to her:
-From your expertise as VP Account Director, tell us how client
management works in an ad agency; what is the process of turning a
lead into an account? How is this relationship maintained and expanded in the future? Can you give us examples in your experience?
-What are positives and negatives of advertising in a poor
economic-climate? Two perspectives: From the account side, is it more
important to gain new clients, or to expand on the services of
existing accounts? From the creative side, what messages/ideologies
are most important?
These are a bit specific, but they are simply "conversation-starters." Also, we will again ask if she will be collecting resumes, and see if she would be willing to speak on Troy's internship program.
Similarly, I have talked with our new co-adviser Lynne Sebille-White who will be providing us with a contact at Google, and hopefully at PriceWaterhouseCoopers. More on this story as it develops.
Lastly, for the hands-on marketing project where we approach a business and actually provide a written plan and course of action for improving their marketing, I agree that those who want to take this on must be fully dedicated. So before we implement anything, we need to feel out interest, and the level of interest.
For potential businesses I feel that the Ann Arbor Comedy Showcase, Blimpy Burger, Zanzibar, and other localities could be interested. I will draft a better plan outlining prospective businesses after I find out who is interested. On that note, I will be sending out a survey for immediate response.
Well, I have started to ramble, and so I will go back to picking corn out in the fields of South Dakota. Good day.

VP Update
From the Desk of Jenna Clark...
Well, more like a computer lab. That I share with 6 other interns.
I'm at work, doing commercial research in the QSR industry, trying to see what competitors are doing with interactive media.
As far as DEX, I don't have any updates. Like Vickie said, just try to stay on top of things, and always be brainstorming for events and activities we can do this year. For example, do we want our social thing to be food? activity? (whirly ball, pool, bowling) party?
Doing something with a business twist could also be fun, as that is the focus point of our club. Maybe if we did something with teams, we could make each team name be of a big name company.
That's all I can think of for now. Hope everyone is enjoying their summers. So weird to think that we're more than a month into it already. We'll all be back in Ann Arbor promoting DEX before we know it.
Enjoy.

MD June 15th Update
I sent out the survey and I am still waiting for the results. I have gotten a few responses and they all favor Festifall for the primary means of recruiting new members. Another point of interest was the overwhelming support for a DEX social event. If people are truly interested in seeing the informal side to DEX we must come up with something to do. I'll keep brainstorming for some evetnts, any ideas would be great. Enjoy June.

Vickie's June 15 Update!
Hey everyone!
I'm at work right now so I have to make this short. I got assigned to work in the Social Media group at Starcom, which is great because I'm on twitter and facebook all day :)
Nothing new to update but just wanted to make sure everyone is still on track with everything. I'm excited that speakers have been booked, and the Member Development survey was great. Results? Nate, I also like the idea of members sending in questions before meetings - especially because we can have things to talk about, and also people who are shy can still get their questions answered.
Alex, a marketing project where we work with a local business in AA is a cool idea, but this is something that needs to be VERY well-planned and organized if we are going to do it, because we obviously don't want to hurt the business. A couple clubs at Michigan do this already, so we also don't want to overlap clients. Do you have anyone in mind?

UD from the VP
Hey Everyone.
(Jenna-ness)
I apologize for my tardyness, but I haven't been on my own computer in almost 4-5 days. My life consists of working at the golf course at 6am, working out, and shopping. Then the occasional hanging out and playing monopoly or Mario Kart. Needless to say, i'm looking forward to the weekend so I can sleep. Move to chicago on Friday, Start work Monday. Vickie visited me in Naperville today (and reminded me to write this, haha) which was really fun.
(DEX-ness)
-hooray that we have a new co-advisor!
-glad to see that things are moving along with our MD and PD peeps. Keep up the great work guys, we are already great steps ahead of last year's summer prep.
-I've been thinking about speaking topics for the mini-lunches and various contacts that I have in fields that could be helpful to people in DEX. I'm much experienced in marketing/advertising, but have friends in pretty much every discipline. Maybe compiling this type of info could be useful for the club.
-Shane and I have been in contact, and he has been looking at various options for corporate grants. I also sent him information on making the budget so that'll be underway soon.
-I think that's all i've got for now. so back to packing.
Peace out DEXY Kids

June 01, 2009
Alright, first of all sorry guys i didnt post on may 15th. Ive been busy with school and work.
But i got some good news, (well kind of). I have booked one speaker already for October 7th, its going to be anywhere from 1-3 representatives from the michigan sports marketing department. The departments representative has confirmed that date with me, however she hasnt confirmed who exactly will be speaking and how many people will be speaking at this event. So its kind of an unofficial confirmation. But they seem very willing and my contact wit the department, Katy Jackson told me to speak with her in August when she will have a better idea as to who will be speaking and then DECA can promote accordingly.
Also, I spoke to the Red Wings representative that Vicki told me about, and he will be holding a career day sometime at the beginning of the regular season in October. His name is Eric Freiny and he has cordially invited our DECA members to this event. He will send me more details later as they get confirmed.
On one final note, I am going to this KPMG career thing on wednesday and I was going to speak with one of their HR reps to see if a recruiter or somebody from PR would like to come out and speak to our DECA members sometime in november or january of 2010. I will let you guys know if I am successful with getting a confirmation with a spokesperson from KPMG.
One more final final note, alex and I have been throwing out some contingency plans just in case we arent able to book the speakers in the months that we would like. Once we finalize those contingency plans we will let all of you know.
Thanks hope you guys are having a great and relaxing summer!!!

MB June 1st Update
Recently received an email from tech saying I had to update my email or something so I am finally back in business. I just sent out the survey, tried to keep it short knowing the minimum attention span during the summer. Going to start drawing up a point system relatively soon.
For Nelish and Alex: As far as making our b-school seminars and resume workshops more interactive, we could have anyone who plans to attend send us questions before the workshop. Assuming we get a few responses and that these questions are shared by many, we would be able to better prepare ourselves. This would make the workshops more worthwhile and we wouldn't be covering too much of what people already know. Just a first thought I'll keep more in mind.

Alex's PD Update - June 1!
Hi All,
Professional Development is moving and shaking like always, and we have put some time into contacting speakers already. My partner in crime and I have split up the responsibilities, and so here is my share of the update:
-I have contacted Emily Shahady from Leo Burnett via email. She is a busy person and sent me a brief reply stating that she intends to visit us again, but cannot completely commit fully yet becuase the Troy branch is experiencing some difficulty with losing their major account (Pontiac) to the economy. I will continue to stay in contact with her, specifically (hopefully) finding out when she will know for certain her avialability.
-I have also reached out to Ella at Target to see her avialability. I am still waiting on a response and expect one soon. I will update the blog when I hear anything.
-Lastly, we are still looking for contacts at Google (besides our intern connections) and at PWC. We are doing our own research, but of course, if you know of anyone who would be good to talk to in booking a speaker for either two companies, please let me know! Yay, teamwork!
That is pretty much the report so far; Nilesh will be adding his section shortly.
Also, another question to throw out to the group--How do you feel about a marketing project where we work with a local business in AA? It would be led by the PD Committee.
Also also, Nilesh and I will be brainstorming ways to make our workshops (Resume/State Prep/B-school essay, etc.) more interactive and informative. If you have any ideas you'd like implemented for this upcoming year, feel free to bounce them off of us :)
Enjoy the summer! I think I am going to steal an ice cream truck now...
-Alex
