I'm a planner. Before I got started with the "Game of Life", I did some research to find the inevitable caveat to the seemingly simple game. From there, I reviewed the listed insructions, collaborated with my peers, and finally began the game.

John Conway's GAME OF LIFE seemed simple enough at first. At first, I just started clicking on the quickly disappearing yellow boxes. I soon discovered that I definitely needed to read the directions.
The rules gave me some direction. I was able to start with the outline of a box and continually add onto its edges. This worked for some time until the boxes divided on the screen and I lost control each figure. The game ended on my own terms. However there was no score or results at the end, which was a bit frustrating.
Many aspects of the GAME OF LIFE reminded me Darwin's Theory of Evolution. According to Evolutionary Theory, evolution follows certain parameters such as natural selection, genetic drift, independent assortment of alleles, etc. These are set rules, just like the rules John Conway gives us in the GAME OF LIFE. We have to follow these rules, but we have control over the mouse, thus some control over the outcome of the game. In evolution, actually playing the game is akin to choosing mates or certain environments to live in so as to increase reproductive and evolutionary success. Yet eventually, species become extinct (i.e. the GAME OF LIFE ends).

When we were told to play a game in class, I was curious about what the game would be. When were told to play the "Game of Life" I was really interested to find out more. To be honest, I was very confused at first and asked myself what is the point of the game and how do you play it? At first, I started clicking random boxes to see if I would be able to determine what to do. After five minutes of utter confusion, I read the directions and did some research. I realized that I rather struggle for a while and figure something out than read the directions. If somebody hands you a toy, you are most likely going to play with it and figure out what it does rather than set the toy down and read the directions.
