Integrative Op-shun

By now, there's been so much useful academic specialization that it sometimes becomes difficult to link what has become disparate parts into a whole learner, someone who is able to meld separate learning exposures into amalgamated structures that draw from multiple information and experience strands to form systems of understanding and engagement that could not exist without the mergers.

The compartmental approach or academic fragmentation model properly focuses on an area or sub-area for some level of competence or mastery of that area.

This expertise, however, does not account for the whole of that person who has become an expert.

Interests in interdisciplinary academic models seem to acknowledge a need to assemble wholes from the specialized fragments, but this vision, as well-meant as it often is, sometimes creates a hybrid compartment or fragment; the kinds of outcomes possible from the mergers in interdisciplinary studies have already been and can be imagined, so innovation occurs within conceived constraints; thus, interdisciplinary studies tends to combine that which is easily seen as capable of being combined. Discovery in such circumstances may actually be more compromised than encouraged.

Particular models of the whole that might emerge as interdisciplinary outcomes are assumed if not outrightly stated.

Responsibilities for the construction of the whole learner often is not given to the student who takes part in a structured interdisciplinary program. Often, the whole learner takes responsibility through a form of independent major or modified program for which permission is sought, and often granted.

Ultimately, the student should be allowed to take responsibility for creatively investigating mutiple possible outcomes of assembling knowledge and experience and dream fragments into new structures and systems. Whether or not there is a precedent for outcomes from the particular sets of fragments from which a student can build, the creative building should occur, and with it can occur possibilities of discovery and innovation.

Concurrently, teams of students should be charged with building several somethings from the combined input of their multiple fragment streams.

No knowledge in any given area should be seen as a whole; all is fragment; there may be whole fragmants, but each whole fragment is nevertheless a part of something which is likely a whole fragment itself.

Students leave an academic instution with a degree and multiple integrative outcomes, some of which may have lasting impact on local and global communities.

Take the unhappy planet index survey

From Men's Health where there's tons of useful stuff comes this article and survey (the last page) about global happiness.

You might want to compare these surveys and their results with this data from the Material World research. This data is part of Nova's WORLD in the BALANCE ongoing investigation.

By the way, I took the unhappy planet index survey, and these were my results:

Leave your car in the garage. Car use has a huge impact on ecological footprint. Obviously it's more difficult for people in certain circumstances, but where possible, try to use public transport more. Or, even better, get on a bike!
It's obvious, but we have to say it. Conserve energy. Turn off the lights when you leave a room, buy energy-efficient bulbs and appliances, turn off your TV completely, rather than leave it on standby.

You don't have to become vegetarian, but cutting down on meat, particularly beef, and particularly from animals fed by imported soya feed, is an effective step to reducing your footprint.
It has to be said that air travel is one of the biggest contributors to many people's footprints. For example, flying direct from London to Sydney and back would add 5.44 g ha to your footprint - that's the average Briton's footprint for an entire year. Flights with a connection add even more polluting air miles.

How I miss the pre-Terminator "worlds's only boxing robots." Surely on the right track, in the right ring, and so forth; perhaps some of the creators of the film and/or some of the film crew played Rockem Sockem Robots. Somehow, the protocols of robot behavior became known (to them); that is to say, the Terminators do not behave outside of what is easy to either imagine or accept about robots.

According to THIS online article, the world's first working robot joined the GM Assembly line in 1961. The fighting robots appeared five years later.
