Someone is reading this blog
An email I received:
Hello David,My name is Kelly Fraser and I am a reporter with the Michigan Daily. I recently came across your mblog on the Frieze building and North Quad project. I'm working on another article about the project for Monday's paper because the University recently announced that a new firm was hired to redesign North Quad's exterior. I would like to speak to you about what this means to the project. Does this change your opinion about North Quad? What type of facade or exterior details would improve the design?
Sincerely,
Kelly Fraser
And my reply:
Hello Kelly,Thanks for your interest in my blog. I had always hoped that the Frieze building would not be torn down and I would have preferred to see it renovated and recycled like the Dana Building. I wrote about a few schools that were preserved on my blog: one in Detroit and one in Ypsilanti that were turned into residential buildings: http://mblog.lib.umich.edu/frieze/archives/2006/05/north_quad_feat.html. And Charleston High School where they just kept the facade: http://mblog.lib.umich.edu/frieze/archives/2006/05/charleston_high.html.
That said, I'm looking forward to the new design. I like Robert A M. Stern and I like Weill Hall and so should you since it's an homage to the Pond brothers, architects of the student publications building, home of the Michigan Daily, now being renovated.
What type of facade or exterior details would improve the design? How about this: http://static.flickr.com/35/124950052_9b3e891c14_b.jpg
