Daily article about North Quad
Today's Daily has a column about North Quad by their architecture critic, Austin Dingwall. Dingwall is no fan of historic architecture and has written previously that retaining the facade of the Carnegie Library-"this dinky, stone remnant," he calls it-will prevent North Quad from reaching its full potential.
In today's column he compares the North Quad project to the divisiveness over plans to rebuild Ground Zero in Manhattan and hopes that the new architect, Robert A.M. Stern, can produce a good design amid the conflicting voices.
Dingwall writes that "North Quad is on a good track backed by rational thinking," but it strikes me as irrational to hire a "modern traditionalist" to design a new building when you already have a building in the traditional traditionalist style.
I would compare North Quad to this current building trend.
