School starts next week
September 4th is the official start of the fall semester here. Things are already picking up here on Sotuh University - signup booths for local banks and the cable monopoly, lots of fresh faced youth and their parents ambling about the sidewalks, trying to figure out where they are and where they're going, new batches of posters for the latest school events and band performances...
This is my first time being on campus and exposed to this sort of activity, so it's pretty cool for a die-hard people watcher like me. Of course, being a guy, there's always a particular subset of people that's more enjoyable to watch... :) I just need to learn more about this part of campus so I'll be able to give a useful answer when someone says "Excuse me, how do I get to X?"

Episode #17, in MP3!
After some delay, here's the zoo episode! Not as many animal noises as I was hoping to hear, but there's still some interesting stuff. Sorry if the train ride at the end is kinda loud.
Also, at San's suggestion, I'm posting this episode in the feed in mp3 format instead of the iTunes / iPod / Apple standard m4a. This means no pictures, and twice the file size, and re-compressed audio... why am I doing this again, San?

My friends, my listeners, my twitterers...
I must apoligize for my abscence.
It's been a busy month or so around the ol' homestead. Between my ramblings with the doctor, and the other family activities, and the ever-growing time sink that is Second Life, things have really been hopping! Add to that my hobby burnout, and you get what's happened here the last few weeks.
You see, this is a pattern I've seen myself repeat time and again. Some shiny new thing catches my attention - a new game, a new technology, a new hobby - and I'm all over it for three or four months. Then, I burn myself out on it, and then I move to something new. That's what happened to the podcasting. I carried my recording gear around everwhere, keeping an ear out for the next cool sound. But after a while, it started to lose it's spark when I was having to put more work into what I was trying to do for fun.
And then Second Life came back into view, and it was the new shiny. Not only that, but the only time I could play with it was the time I was spending editing the podcasts! Even Mrs. Zaren got involved in SL, and we've been chasing each other around to various dance clubs and other scenic places. It's pretty cool in that respect - we can "go out dancing", and not have to pay a babysitter or worry about who's watching the kids, because we're just sitting in the basement at our computers!
But even that's starting to wear a little thin. Wifey's been working hard and coming down sick and not been able to stay up late like she had been, and the Second Life system is having stability problems and crashing and stuff. So, I guess that means I have to turn back to podcasting :)
I've had the next episode sitting on my computer screen here for the last two weeks, daring me to sit down and work on it. So, as soon as this is posted, that's what I'm going to do. I'm not sure how much good audio I got from the zoo when we went, but I'll use what I have. I know the indoor aviary sounds good. I'll shoot to have the next episode out in a few days - AND in mp3 format, so more people can listen to it! I see by the tracking map that someone actually stopped by from Italy, so words getting out somewhere - might as well get back to work and give Italy something to listen to while they're here!

Episode #16 1/2 is up!
Just to keep San off my back and keep my posting rythym, here's the next episode. I want to have the material I got from the zoo last weekend be #17, so this filler will officially be episode 16 1/2. Enjoy listening to me going candy shopping!
