Health sciences resources made more accessible

A number of freely available resources have been cataloged recently, so that they can be more easily accessed by researchers. These databases may now be found in Search Tools:

Culture, Language, and Health Literacy, from the Dpt. of Health and Human Services, provides training resources and assessment tools for cultural and
linguistic competency for health care delivery.

Vaccines, Blood & Biologics is an FDA site that provides information about licensed vaccines and their safety and availability.

Here are several statistical resources that have also been added to Search Tools:

Centers for Disease Control Data & Statistics

National Center for Health Statistics

Department of Health and Human Services Data Sources

Two other resources have been linked in the MIRLYN catalog:

American Heart Association, Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical
Update highlights, which provides selected tables from the annual Heart Disease and Stroke Statistical Update and links to the latest update published in Circulation.

Upcoming Talk by Jasna Markovic

The U-M Medical School Office of Enabling Technologies and Taubman Health Sciences Library are pleased to Co-Present:

Taking Advantage of Trends and Opportunities in Science and Medical Publishing

Jasna Markovac, Ph.D.
Senior Advisor, Publishing and Related Business Development
University of Michigan Medical School
Wednesday, 16 March 2011
noon — 1:00 pm (lunch will be served)
Sheldon Lecture Room
G2115 Towsley Center

The current state of medical publishing is very dynamic and also very exciting. The migration of print publications to the electronic environment, especially with respect to content development and information delivery, offers many opportunities for new initiatives. As publishing moves away from the traditional book and journal formats, the content itself becomes much more important than the vehicle by which it is published. This trend provides authors with more opportunities to disseminate content and data in novel ways. In addition, it lends itself to the development of subject gateways, information communities and knowledge bases which provide a ‘one stop shop’ for access to large quantities of content in a given discipline.

The objective of this session is to discuss the future of medical publishing, both within the context of the University of Michigan Medical School and the broader scope of commercial and not-for-profit publishing organizations. We will explore ways to develop revenue opportunities that are built around the open access mechanisms supported by the various funding bodies. We will discuss some specific examples of how to take advantage of the online environment to maximize the visibility and the distribution of content.

• How to decide where to publish your research and your clinical studies.
• How to publish your textbook on a web site with interactive features.
• How to organize an information community to promote your department’s clinical and research activities.

About Jasna Markovac
Dr. Markovac received training in life sciences and earned a Ph.D. in human genetics at U-M. After several years in academics, she changed careers to join the Science Technical Medical publishing industry. For the past two and a half years, she has worked for U-M, first at the Library, and more recently at the Medical School, focusing on academic publishing initiatives, exploring new publication opportunities, and providing consultation services to faculty, staff, and students for all aspects of the publishing process.

For more information
You can find a program flyer for Dr. Markovac's upcoming presentation, at http://sitemaker.umich.edu/enablingtech/files/markovac-3-11_flyer.pdf
Please share this notice with your interested colleagues!

MLA is a health sciences information organization whose mission is to educate health information professionals, support health information research, promote access to the world's health sciences information, and ensure that the best health information is available to all.

Blumenthal was elected to the MLA Board of Directors in 2008, and will end a two-year term as MLA Treasurer just before assuming the role of president-elect. She is also chair of the MLA/AAHSL Joint Legislative Task Force, as well as the American Diabetes Association’s Publications Policy Committee. She chaired the MLA National Program Committee for its 2008 annual meeting, and served as senior associate editor and on the editorial board of the Bulletin (now Journal) of the Medical Library Association. She has also been a member of the board of directors of the Association of Academic Health Sciences Libraries (AAHSL) and served on the National Network of Libraries of Medicine, Southeastern/Atlantic Regional Advisory Council.

Blumenthal is a Distinguished Member of the Academy of Health Information Professionals, and was selected to participate in the Frye Leadership Institute in 2002 and the Harvard-Macy Institute for Leaders in Medical Education in 2003.

On being elected, Blumenthal said, “I am honored and excited by the opportunity to serve this association of knowledgeable, talented, and dynamic members. I am confident we can tap into our energy and insight to meet the challenges facing libraries, hospitals, health care providers, and educational institutions.” Blumenthal went on to explain that information professionals not only support researchers and health care professionals; they also empower patients and families by supplying free, reliable health information. “In this digital age,” she said, “we continue to map the information wilderness, and guide our clients through it.”

HealthCare.gov is now online

Health care consumers will be pleased to discover HealthCare.gov, the new website put up by the Department of Health and Human Services to provide information about 2010 Affordable Care Act. This Act, which took effect on September 23, is designed to curb abusive practices in the health insurance industry. In addition to explaining the new law, the HealthCare.gov allows consumers to locate private insurance plans and compare benefits, premiums, and coverage between different plans and providers. Providers are also now required to submit data on how many applicants have been denied coverage and how many of the enrolled customers are paying higher costs due to health conditions, and this data is published as well.

The site allows the user to search for area hospitals and nursing homes, and allows comparisons between them based on patient surveys or other quality measures. Another section provides preventative health care information and links to Healthfinder.gov.

To aid in discovering and accessing HealthCare.gov, it has been added to SearchTools.

Recent Email Delivery Problem with thlibrary@umich.edu - now resolved

We became aware yesterday that certain emails addressed to thlibrary@umich.edu since August 31 did not arrive in our account as intended. This problem was due to modifications made to some of our email group addresses to address another issue, but which had unintended consequences. We sought to recover these emails, but have received confirmation that this is not possible. We reconfigured our accounts yesterday and thoroughly tested them, and all email addressed to thlibrary@umich.edu should reach us going forward.
