A chilling story

in the Sunday New York Times, Cancer Patients, Lost in a Maze of Uneven Care - New York Times.

Even with good insurance and access to information, patients get inconsistent and ineffective treatment, sometimes with deadly results.

Coincidentally, Terry Arndt and I had an email conversation about this article yesterday and cynically agreed that the patient, self-proclaimed with type A behavior, was probably a real nuisance to her series of physicians; however, her persistence probably resulted in her saving her own life.

I thought it was a fascinating article too for all the reasons mentioned above as well as conveying the difficulty in deciding about treatment options and risk on a personal level once the insurance, current research information, and second/third opinions are secured.
