Wikia Search
In case you missed it, Jimmy Wales and company unleashed an alpha version of Search Wikia the other day. The search results are very poor and there isn't an advanced search function, but its openness and transparency separates it from its searching competition. Its fate largely rests in the hands of its users.
For some commentary, check out this interesting review from TechCrunch (and be sure to read Wales' comments).

Thanks for pointing this out, Mark-Mac. Know Wikipedia, of course, but had not seen any pr for Search Wikia (although the comments indicate that there was a lot of it.)

Yeah, I remember hearing about it in early '07... in a Jimmy Wales interview on Net@Nite. The focus was on Wikipedia, but in passing Wales mentioned that he was hoping to create an open-source search engine to compete with Google. And, lo and behold, here it be, a year later.
If you'd like to listen to it, here's the link: http://twit.tv/natn13. Wales comes into it after 20 minutes or so.
