Rationing Health Care in a Pandemic

Apparently some task force was established to determine which segments of the population would not be provided with health care during a health disaster.

To prepare, hospitals should designate a triage team with the Godlike task of deciding who will and who won't get lifesaving care, the task force wrote. Those out of luck are the people at high risk of death and a slim chance of long-term survival. But the recommendations get much more specific, and include:

-People older than 85.

-Those with severe trauma, which could include critical injuries from car crashes and shootings.

-Severely burned patients older than 60.

-Those with severe mental impairment, which could include advanced Alzheimer's disease.

-Those with a severe chronic disease, such as advanced heart failure, lung disease or poorly controlled diabetes.

Yes, I do have OPINIONS on this. Why don't we hear anything about a possible pandemic--right here at UM? I know that there is work being done on this topic, but the only reason I know this is that I happen to belong to VOICES--Core Team. What about everyone else? Shouldn't *everyone* be informed of what is going on behind the scenes locally on this extremely important topic? As a matter of fact, now that I have worked myself up to a certain stage of indignation and irritation, I shall write a letter to some individuals who might be in a position to reveal to the UM community what is being planned in this context! :)

There have been a few stories about the university's efforts in this regard, but it's true that we haven't heard a lot. I suspect that we'll hear more when the plans for each department of the university are complete.

I'm aware of the process because I'm a backup rep. for the Dentistry Library to the School of Dentistry task force (so I get emails, although I don't participate in meetings).
