A STRATEGIC FIGUREHEAD IN INTERNATIONAL DEFENSE...MICHAEL PILLSBURY
Michael Pillsbury holds a B.A. in History from Stanford and an M.A. and a Ph.D. from Columbia and has been involved in military defense in the United States for over 40 years. So why haven't we heard this name more often? I am not really sure since he has been in politics and has been very influential in the U.S. especially in regards to our communications with nations such as China and Afghanistan.
In addition to being a political analyst and adviser to both Reagan and Carter during their administrations, he is also a published author, having penned two books about China and the influence of their ancient history on the making of their foreign policies. Michael Pillsbury has also written many published articles in reference to International Security and Foreign Policy suggesting that the best way to address issues with China is to establish military and intelligence ties with the country and US government officials liked his ideas so much that they helped to create the Reagan Doctrine which effectively put in place a program of covert aid. Mike Pillsbury has served as a military adviser to several presidents and has played a major role in US relations around the world.
Pillsbury was a major contributor to President Carter's decision to initiate ties with China in 1979. He also played a large role in President Reagan's decision to have the CIA provide Stinger missiles to an Afghan resistance group (Charlie Wilson's War). Michael Pillsbury was also an instrumental figure in helping draft the annual defense report sent to Congress in regards to Chinese military power in 2008.
His contributions to our government and military strategies have been documented in several books, like the book "About Face" written by James Mann and the 2008 "Living the Policy Process" written by Clinton's Deputy Attorney General Phillip Heymann. Both of these works acknowledge Michael Pillsbury's tremendous work in providing guidance to Presidents over the past 4 decades.
With all of his training and knowledge especially about China and Afghanistan, he has provided president after president with some key information about these two troubled regions of the world. Over and over again he has warned that we needed to keep watch over these areas and get them under military control, but to date little has really helped. As an key player in the Cold War against China, Michael Pillsbury is an important name that more people need to be aware of because he has been helping to shape the world with his contributions to US military strategists for almost four decades.
