Kresge Library Construction Update

As you may know, the roof of the Kresge Library will be
changed to become a "Green Roof" as part of the creation of
the new Ross School of Business. While we are excited about
a roof that will allow for less run-off of rainwater and help
filter pollutants and CO2 out of the air, this is going to
make for a disruptive summer at Kresge. In addition, new
group study/interview rooms will be constructed on the second
floor.

Here is a recap of what you can expect at the library this
summer:

1. Fourth Floor Quiet Study Area
With the installation of the drains under the roof and the
actual removal of the roof itself, the fourth floor will be a
noisy place. We expect that the construction project will
start Monday May 19th and last two months. Unfortunately
this means that the quiet study area will be closed for the
duration of the project. The fourth floor will be open to
retrieve books and journals. We expect/hope that this work
will be completed by the end of July in time for the students
to start returning in August.

We do offer students, faculty and staff ear plugs (and are
ordering more) that are available at the Circulation Desk on
the second floor.

2. Moving of the Kresge Reference Collection
To accommodate the construction of the new group
study/interview rooms on the second floor, the reference
collection has been moved to the fourth floor. The space has
been converted to student workspace and we are now able to
accommodate around 50 more students on the north side of the
second floor than before. A new shelving unit that will hold
around 300 of the most commonly used reference books will be
added near the elevator. This project should be completed by
Fall Term.

3. Using the Group Study Rooms on the Third Floor
Given the noise on the second and fourth floors, we are
hoping that the group study rooms on the third floor will
work for people who need a quiet place to study. We will be
adding some tables in the entry space to maximize student
space.

4. Construction on the Second Floor Connector to the New
Building
There will be times during the summer when construction crews
will be working on the walkway between Kresge Library and the
new building. Floor and ceiling work will start on Wednesday
May 21st and should continue through the beginning of June.
As you might imagine, more construction is possible later in
the summer.

To recap, here are the key dates:

Wednesday May 14, 2008 - Construction begins on Kresge
Library drains - 4th Floor Quiet Study at Kresge is closed.

Monday May 19, 2008 - Construction begins on Kresge Library
Roof.

Wednesday May 21 through Sunday May 25, 2008 – Construction
on the 2nd Floor Corridor to the new building.

Tuesday May 27, 2008 - Construction ends on Kresge Library
drains (4th Floor of Kresge).

Monday June 2, 2008 - Construction begins on Interview Rooms
on 2nd Floor.

Tuesday July 15, 2008 - Construction ends on Kresge Library
Roof - 4th Floor Quiet Study at Kresge opens back up.

August 2008 - Construction ends on Interview Rooms on 2nd
Floor.

Thanks for your patience during these construction projects.
