Whole Lotta Shakin' Goin' On!

Unbeknownst to people in the Ross building, Kresge Library has passed a thorough test to its structural soundness. What test, you ask? Why, only the test of an actual earthquake. Yesterday, August 23, 2011 at approximately 1:55pm, Kresge staff were surprised to feel the effects of an earthquake as the upper floors of the building rocked. The shaking went on for several minutes causing desks to vibrate and lights to sway on their hinges.

Being Librarians, several staff members turned the the US Geological Survey, a reliable source for information for seismic and geological activity, to see if there assumptions about the shaking were correct. A quick check of the USGS site verified the existence of the earthquake.

The "Did You Feel It?" map shows how far the seismic activity traveled. The 5.9 earthquake traveled from Virginia up the eastern seaboard and could be felt as far as Canada.
Earthquakes are not often associated with Michigan, but they are more common than one would think. Last year a 5.0 earthquake that affected the Ontario region, rocked the Kresge library and other parts of southeastern Michigan proving that Michigan is not free from such events. So next time you feel that maybe the road is just a little extra bumpy, you may want to check with the Kresge Library, because it might be an earthquake.

Kresge Gets Clean!

This past month, Kresge Library got a bit of a "spruce up" thanks to volunteers from ProQuest (one of our database vendors) and Kresge staff!

As a part of their Library Volunteer Program, ProQuest sent 7 staff members to the Kresge Library to help with a project. Half of a day was devoted to cleaning up the 4th floor, which included dusting books and shelves, doing minor repairs, and other general cleaning. A grand total of 10,000 books were cleaned!

The fun and excitement of the day were captured on film through library director Corey Seeman. You can view the photos on flickr.
