There's an old joke that there are more men online than women, and most of the women online are men pretending to be women. But, gender does really seem to be a defining factor in what people look at online, and how they look at it.

Stay Up To Date with Database Alerts

One of the challenges of keeping up on a topic, whether you are a student or a professional, is dealing with the huge amount of information that is available in research databases. Searching databases takes time, and much of that time is often spent paging through resources and links you ultimately don't need.

To address that problem, many databases that are accessible through the Kresge Library have developed alert functionality. These services allow users to save an RSS feed or an email alert, usually through an individual account, that provides regular updates with information on a selected keyword or search phrase.

After you do a search, these database gives you the option to create an email or RSS alert based on the search terms you provided. You can generally limit the frequency with which you get an email alert, and sometimes can even include an end date when you want to stop receiving updates. This is a great tool to use during a project with a specific deadline. RSS feeds will generate a link that you can go to any time through an RSS reader to see updates to your search.

To find out what database resources at Kresge Library include alerts features, take a look at our A-Z Database List. Resources that have email alert functionality will be marked with a symbol, and RSS features have a symbol.

A Great Place for Advertising: YouTube

There are a number of resources that you can use to view advertisements. One of the resources that is definitely worth checking out is YouTube (it is not just for stupid stunts anymore)!

From the New York Times

For Marketing, the Most Valuable Player Might Be YouTube
By STUART ELLIOTT
Published: February 5, 2008
The Internet, digital video recorders, mobile devices and other technologies are giving a strong postgame presence to the annual roster of Super Bowl commercials.

Follow this link for the full article.

With more and more advertising available via YouTube and other resources, it is easier than ever to find and use advertising in your research.

The trick is getting the file so you can use it on your desktop when you are not connected to the Internet. Getting a file from YouTube has been tricky. But there is a great web application that you can use to grab YouTube videos and convert them to MP4 files.

Called YouTube to iPod and PSP Converter, this small program will download and convert YouTube videos into an MP4 file format among others. Good for your iPod, your PowerPoint Presentation or for working offline. This is from DVDVIDEOSOFT.COM and is free.

For students and faculty at the Ross School of Business, there is also Adforum. This database provides access to over 35,000 advertisements in all media. The focus is international. The database has audio and video capability. The source also provides access to news and other information relating to the advertising industry, including agency information. Be sure to log off as directed on the password sign on screen.

4) Company profiles now have a “clear? button, so you can wipe all the search criteria instantly. You can also refine searches more easily as Plunketts will remember your last inputs with the “refine your search? link on the results page.

5) A mini Google search engine is now available in every Industry Research Center, so you can search across all data in a single industry, without reference to where that data is stored.

7) Glossaries have full-alphabet indexes at the top of each page.
