Printing at Kresge Library and Name Tents

The Kresge Library Wiki now has a page of information about the new printing at Ross.

Also, if you forgot your name tents and the faculty are wondering who you are, you can get a replacement name tent at Kresge Library (visit the circulation desk on the second floor). Also see the wiki page for the template to print out your name tent.

New wireless access points in Kresge Library

Ross Computer Services is currently engaged in updating wireless access points around Kresge Library. Old access points will be replaced one at a time on the 2nd and 3rd floors, while access points on the west side of the 4th floor will be down slightly longer.

Wireless will still be available throughout the 2nd and 3rd floors, as well as on the east side of the 4th floor, until the new access points are complete. We apologize for any access issues this process may cause, but we look forward to having a robust wireless network ready for the busy fall semester.

Kresge Library launches new homepage

Kresge Library's homepage has a new look. The goal of the redesign was to highlight the Library's most used resources and services, and to provide site visitors with an even easier way to contact Kresge staff. With email, phone, and IM information up front, a new Meebo chat box, Library news, and more features, the new homepage will hopefully help us communicate better with our visitors and patrons.

Have a question or comment about the new homepage? Email us to let us know what you think!

Facilities staff will be turning power off for the Ross complex between 4pm on Saturday, June 27, and 3am on Sunday, June 28, to complete maintenance related to construction of the new building. This will affect servers for all Ross websites, including the Kresge Library site, catalog, and access to some databases that connect through our proxy server. We apologize for any inconvenience.

Additionally, Kresge Library will be closed on Saturday, June 27, for the semester break.

Kresge Library Service Interruption (Saturday September 20, 8am to 2pm)

We are updating computer network equipment on Saturday September 20th and that will lead to some connection problems at Kresge Library. The installation of new network hardware will take place on Saturday September 20th from 8am to 2pm.

During this window, the network will be down for not only people in Kresge Library, but also for people try to connect to Kresge resources (through our proxy servers) from off campus.

We will maintain regular hours at Kresge Library on the 20th (10am to 10pm), but please be aware that we will probably not have network and Internet access before 2pm. This will have an impact on our services, including coursepack pickup and checking items out of the library.

Also please be aware that remote access to Kresge Databases will not work. However, resources that are available across campus can be used during this outage. For a list of these databases that will be available, please visit:

Photos of Kresge Library's Green Roof

The Kresge Library has been undergoing quite a change over the summer. In addition to the new group study rooms on the second floor, we also have added a new toupee...well, green roof! Our green roof is part of the LEED Certification for the new home for the Ross School of Business building at the Ann Arbor Campus.

Here are some pictures during the installation of the sedum on the green roof.

If you are wondering what is a green roof, the benefits include:
-Returns less water to the sewer systems - less run-off
-Kresge Library's fourth floor should be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
-Help filter pollutants and CO2 out of the air - instead of just adding heat into the environment.

Kresge Library Construction Update

As you may know, the roof of the Kresge Library will be
changed to become a "Green Roof" as part of the creation of
the new Ross School of Business. While we are excited about
a roof that will allow for less run-off of rainwater and help
filter pollutants and CO2 out of the air, this is going to
make for a disruptive summer at Kresge. In addition, new
group study/interview rooms will be constructed on the second
floor.

Here is a recap of what you can expect at the library this
summer:

1. Fourth Floor Quiet Study Area
With the installation of the drains under the roof and the
actual removal of the roof itself, the fourth floor will be a
noisy place. We expect that the construction project will
start Monday May 19th and last two months. Unfortunately
this means that the quiet study area will be closed for the
duration of the project. The fourth floor will be open to
retrieve books and journals. We expect/hope that this work
will be completed by the end of July in time for the students
to start returning in August.

We do offer students, faculty and staff ear plugs (and are
ordering more) that are available at the Circulation Desk on
the second floor.

2. Moving of the Kresge Reference Collection
To accommodate the construction of the new group
study/interview rooms on the second floor, the reference
collection has been moved to the fourth floor. The space has
been converted to student workspace and we are now able to
accommodate around 50 more students on the north side of the
second floor than before. A new shelving unit that will hold
around 300 of the most commonly used reference books will be
added near the elevator. This project should be completed by
Fall Term.

3. Using the Group Study Rooms on the Third Floor
Given the noise on the second and fourth floors, we are
hoping that the group study rooms on the third floor will
work for people who need a quiet place to study. We will be
adding some tables in the entry space to maximize student
space.

4. Construction on the Second Floor Connector to the New
Building
There will be times during the summer when construction crews
will be working on the walkway between Kresge Library and the
new building. Floor and ceiling work will start on Wednesday
May 21st and should continue through the beginning of June.
As you might imagine, more construction is possible later in
the summer.

To recap, here are the key dates:

Wednesday May 14, 2008 - Construction begins on Kresge
Library drains - 4th Floor Quiet Study at Kresge is closed.

Monday May 19, 2008 - Construction begins on Kresge Library
Roof.

Wednesday May 21 through Sunday May 25, 2008 – Construction
on the 2nd Floor Corridor to the new building.

Tuesday May 27, 2008 - Construction ends on Kresge Library
drains (4th Floor of Kresge).

Monday June 2, 2008 - Construction begins on Interview Rooms
on 2nd Floor.

Tuesday July 15, 2008 - Construction ends on Kresge Library
Roof - 4th Floor Quiet Study at Kresge opens back up.

August 2008 - Construction ends on Interview Rooms on 2nd
Floor.

Thanks for your patience during these construction projects.
If you ever have any questions about the library or our
services, please do not hesitate to contact Corey Seeman at cseeman@umich.edu.

Kresge Library Closed on Saturday May 17, 2008

On Saturday May 17, 2008, the Kresge Library and the entire Ross School of Business complex will be closed. The complex will not have any water because of the need to connect water to the new building and to undertake some needed repairs on the water system in the existing building. This will not have an impact on other libraries on campus.

The Kresge Library will reopen on Sunday May 18th at noon. The Ross Complex will reopen 11am.

Thanks in advance for your patience and understanding.

Library Closed - Weekend of July 7th and 8th

UPDATE: Access to library electronic resources will be available this weekend as we are not taking down the library authentication servers.

The Kresge Library will be closed the weekend of July 7th and 8th because the school will not have Air Conditioning that weekend. The University's Plant Construction notified us that they will be shutting down the cooling systems across the Business School in preparation for the new building.

The AC will actually be turned off on Friday July 5th around 11am, and we will close at 5pm that day (instead of 8pm).

Ross servers (including the mail and authentication server) are planning to remain available during the weekend, so this should allow people to continue to use the resources that we make available remotely. If this changes, we will send out a notification to the school.

The Effected Library Hours:

Friday July 6th – CLOSE AT 5PM
Saturday July 7th – CLOSED ALL DAY
Sunday July 8th – CLOSED ALL DAY

We will open on Monday July 9th at 8am.

Kresge Library is now participating in MeLCat (Michigan Statewide Catalog and Requesting Service)

The Kresge Library is proud to announce our participation in the MeLCat statewide catalog and requesting service.

What is MeLCat?

MeLCat is a statewide catalog and resource sharing project that allows materials to be shared among all types of libraries in Michigan. These materials include books, CDs, DVDs, scores, manuscripts, etc., on a wide range of subjects. MeLCat currently has over 130 participating libraries (not all libraries in Michigan participate). In a nutshell, you now have access to literally millions of items beyond the Kresge Library's walls! With over 19 million items and growing, MeLCat strives to meet your professional, scholarly, and leisure reading material needs.

What are the benefits of MeLCat for Kresge Library patrons?

- One-stop shopping to find materials owned by all types of libraries statewide
- Request materials online from other participating libraries
- Pick up materials from other libraries at Kresge
- Check the status of your request online

MeLCat can help in the following situations (amongst many others):

- Kresge Library does not have the particular book you are looking for. Use MeLCat to find out who does have it, and request it online.

- Kresge Library has the book you need, but it is checked out. Use MeLCat to find out who else has it, and request it online.

- You are working on a MAP project and another library in the state has materials on your topic. Request them online through MeLCat!

- You'd love to check out a cookbook to help with your party planning, but the Kresge Library doesn't have any cookbooks. Check MeLCat to see who does, and request them online.

How does it work?

In the Kresge Library Catalog, there's a new button that reads "Search MeLCat". If you click this button, you can see what is available across the state (at academic and public libraries such as Michigan State, Wayne State, Library of Michigan, Ann Arbor District Library, etc.) To request items from MeLCat, you will need to select "University of MI business" as the library and provide the 14-digit barcode on your MCard.

Have questions?

If you’re uncertain whether you’ve established borrowing privileges with the Kresge Library, have questions or comments about the MeLCat service, or experience any problems requesting items through MeLCat, please feel free to stop by the Library or write to KBALCirculation@bus.umich.edu.

Kresge Library Joins State-wide Lending Program

Kresge Library has joined the state-wide lending program MeLCat. The MeLCat program is sponsed by the Michigan eLibrary and provides users at member institutions with a requesting and delivery service for books and other materials available in remote libraries. Academic and public libraries throughout the state of Michigan participate in this program.

Any person with a current or continuing University of Michigan--Ann Arbor affiliation with a patron record in the Kresge Library automation system can place requests for materials held by other MeLCat libraries, including placing requests for items in our own collections that are unavailable for checkout.

You can access titles available through MeLCat from the Kresge Library's Catalog. After performing a search, you will see a button labeled "Search MeLCat". Click this button to perform you search in MeLCat and request titles that you want. Or you can go directly to MeLCat to search for titles. Delivery takes about a week and you will be notified when your item has been delivered to the Kresge Library.

If you have questions or would like more information about this service, please contact the library at kresge_library@umich.edu.

Where Can I Find this Book?

A new service allowing you to locate books in a library near you, or across the country, is now available. OCLC has made it's WorldCat service available to everyone. WorldCat is a large database of books, periodicals and other materials available in libraries across the country.

Search for a title, enter your zip code or state, and WorldCat will tell you what libraries near you own the title. You will be able to go to one of the nearby libraries and use the item. You may not be able to check out an item if you do not have a card with the owning library.

To have an item requested from another library, you can use the University Library's Inter-Library Loan (ILL) service. The University Library will make the request for you and let you know when the item is available for pick up.

Syndicate this Site

You've probably seen the links all over the web for Syndicate this Site, or the orange and white RSS buttons. But what does it mean? Using RSS (Really Simple Syndication) allows readers of blogs and other sites to subscribe to content.

An RSS reader is needed to manage and read the content from the subscribed sites. RSS readers link to a special URL that allows the reader to know when content has been updated. These links are also referred to as 'feeds'.

RSS readers can be web based, such as Bloglines or installed on your computer. Yahoo! provides a list of popluar RSS readers. Everytime a new item is posted to a blog or site that supports RSS, a notice is sent to the subscibers. The next time the RSS reader is opened, the new information from subscribed sites will be displayed.

Why should you care? RSS can make your life easier. If you routinely visit several sites to read news and find information, an RSS reader can simplify the process for you. You will have one place to visit to get all of your news. Plus if you use a web-based RSS reader, you will always be able to access your subscriptions.

To subscribe to the Kresge In Spotlight blog, open your RSS reader and add the In the Spotlight feed URL accepted by your reader:

All new content that is posted to this site will be picked up by your RSS reader.

To find other sites that offer RSS feeds, visit Feedster, a search engine for RSS feeds.
