Seeing the Light: Lighthouses of the Western Great Lakes (Terry Pepper)
SITE:
URL: http://www.terrypepper.com/Lights/
DESCRIPTION: This is one of my favorite lighthouse websites and one of the best. Terry Pepper has pulled together information for this virtual book on the lighthouses on the Western Great Lakes (Lake Michigan, Lake Superior and Lake Huron). These include those in the states of Wisconsin, Minnesota, Illinois, Indiana, and Michigan. Each of these lighthouses includes extensive information, history, photos and other information. Terry has also done a great job by pulling together general information on lighthouses including the technology, the types of Fresnel lenses, a chronology, information on fog signals just to name a few.
If you had to choose only one site to check for lighthouses in the Great Lakes, you have found your site!

Dunkirk Lighthouse (Lake Erie at Dunkirk, New York)
The grounds of this lighthouse are part of a museum that explores the history of lighthouses on Lake Erie and the different military branches. I was running late, so I only saw the exhibits on the lighthouses and was able to climb the tower. Beautiful view of Lake Erie and on a clear day, you can see Buffalo and Canada. I was there on a hazy day...oh well.
This is the link to some good sites on this lighthouse:

Marblehead Lighthouse (Lake Erie at Marblehead, Ohio)
Visted this lighthouse on Monday July 24. The lighthouse is beautiful and offers a great view of Sandusky Bay and Cedar Point Amusement Park. This is the oldest operating lighthouse on Lake Erie and very much worth the trip.
On my recent trip to the Hall of Fame, I stopped at a few lighthouses and maritime museums along the way. This was the busiest by far and well worth it. At the lighthouse, the keepers house has been converted into a small museum with information on the lighthouse, Lake Erie, the history of the region, and shipping history in the area. When you arrive, you put your name down for a tour of the lighthouse (you can go at specific times) and you can defintely visit the museum or walk along the rocks while you wait.
They have a nice museum and you can climb the tower everyday in the afternoon. The view from the top is quite nice and worth the wait if you have a line of people in front of you.
