Ludington Lighthouse (Cross Stitch Pattern)

I finally finished the my cross stitch pattern that I created for the Ludington Lighthouse.

You can download the pattern here.

Here is a picture of the completed project.

I am hoping that I will create some other Michigan lighthouses from here on out. Ideally, I would like to create kits that museums could sell. I would just send them to them and they can keep all the proceeds.

I used an excellent freeware software. It is called KG-Chart for Cross Stitch.

Grand Haven Lighthouse (Michigan)

Visited the Grand Haven Lighthouse on Lake Michigan on Tuesday July 10, 2007 (see the photos that I posted on Flickr). You can go to Grand Haven State Park and walk down the pier to the lights. We went on a day when the storms had just passed and the waves were still going strong. It is a great walk (be careful of the waves hitting the pier) and definitely worth the visit.

Midwest Connection Lighthouses Page

Midwest Connection Lighthouses Page

Description: This site has a pretty spiffy collection of pages and information on lighthouses across the Great Lakes. if you click on the lake that you are interested in, you can then click on any of the lighthouses that dot the lake. Sometimes I think this makes more sense than breaking things down by state, or country. Just think about Lake Erie with four states and one province.

They offer five ways to navigate the site:

Region - Lets you pick through a series of regions, starting with the entire U.S.A., to narrow down your search. - Best is the Great Lakes

Index - An alphabetical listing of Lighthouses throughout the Midwest. Just click on the name in the listing to view a particular Lighthouse.

Coastline Tours - With this regional map you pick one of the colored tours. This will then walk you through a series of Lighthouses in that tour. Great for planning trips to see a series of Lighthouses. NOTE: Not all the shorelines of the Great Lakes are listed. I might do that on the northern short of Lake Erie this summer on the way to Cooperstown.

Previous / Next Buttons - Move very easily to different site. And a search function on the main page.

Excellent resource, primarily for Great Lakes lighthouses.

Lighthouses on the Azores

Lighthouses on the Azores

Saw an interested article in the Ann Arbor News from John Deiner of the Washington Post on traveling to the Azore Islands. The Azores are part of Portugal and are located about 800 miles west of that country in the Atlantic Ocean. One of the most striking lighthouses is the Capelinhos Lighthouse which is on the island of Faial and survived a volcanic eruption in 1957. The lighthouse has hardened ash all along its base

Here are some links to resources on lighthouses in this beautiful place (I think I would love to go there):

Azores Islands’ lighthouses and small beacons (NOTE: This is from an unpublished book...imagine if all the notes and unpublished books were on the web...would be pretty cool, especially when researching things like history and buildings.

Wanted to pull this out of the entry for the Cape Cod Lighthouses.

From their site: All of the information you need on U. S. lighthouses, in one convenient place. Find basic info, photos, and links to official lighthouse sites, as well as links to some of the most informative and interesting websites and articles about the history, upkeep, and sometimes sadly, the demise of America's lighthouses and keepers.
If they do not have your favorite lighthouse among the 700 or so entries in their system, you can write them and they can add it. Great site from Roland Babineau.

Lighthouses of the Great Lakes (Boatnerd)

SITE: Lighthouses of the Great Lakes (Boatnerd)
URL: http://lighthouse.boatnerd.com/
DESCRIPTION: Very nice website on the lighthouses of the great lakes (hopefully, that is not a surprise). The site features many photographs of Great Lakes lighthouse, organized by body of water. These links include the bodies of water that are not always thought of when looking at the Great Lakes (St. Marys River, Detroit River, and Lake St. Clair. Also included is a message board (which gets moderate traffic), links, and other resources to topics that would be of like interest).

Pages on the lighthouses vary. While all the lighthouses on each body of water are listed, not all have large entries. For most, thera is a nice selection of photographs and basic information. For some, such as Marblehead on Lake Erie, a bigger entry exists.

Chesapeake Bay Lighthouse Project

SITE: Chesapeake Bay Lighthouse Project
URL: http://www.cblights.com/default.asp
DESCRIPTION: Tremendous website about the lighthouses in...well...the Chesapeake Bay along the shores of Virginia, Maryland and Delaware. The site was created and maintained by Matthew Jenkins.

He wrote about the primary section on lighthouses:

"The first section attempts to document all of the existing Bay lighthouses in an easy to navigate, informative format. Within "The Lights" section you'll find photographs and a brief history of every Chesapeake Bay area light that is still standing. Also included is information on the evolution of the government bodies that built and managed the lights, from the Lighthouse establishment under the Secretary of the Treasury to the U.S. Coast Guard. The different types of Bay lighthouses are discussed as are lightships and the various lamps and lenses used. The links section will point you to a number of Bay lighthouse-related, not-for-profit sites and also all of the area maritime museums I know of. Many of these organizations survive on a shoestring budget and a handful of people who really care. I love 'em. This is the most developed section of this site. I'm not a historian and all of this was created for no payment, so please excuse any minor errors (and let me know about them so I can fix them)."

The other two sections on the site describe cruising and his personal information (interest in diving, etc.)

The lighthouse entires are great brief records with links to other resources. All include a photograph. He also has a page and history of the Mumbles Lighthouse (Mouth of Swansea Bay, Glamorgan, Wales U.K.). His general links page has excellent links out to other sites.

Ludington (North Breakwater) Lighthouse (Lake Michigan at Ludington, Michigan)

SITE: Ludington (North Breakwater) Lighthouse (Lake Michigan at Ludington, Michigan)
BODY OF WATER: Lake Michigan

DESCRIPTION: No trip to Ludington is going to be complete without a visit to this great lighthouse on the North Breakwater of the harbor at Ludington. While you cannot go inside the light, people walk along the breakwater to get to the light all the time and it does give you a neat feeling of being in the lake! A great pastime is to go to the city park, right near the lighthouse, and watch the sun set in the west. It is a beautiful view. Around 8pm, the S.S.Badger makes one of its trips across to Manitowoc, Wisconsin.

SITE: Nova Scotia Lighthouse Preservation Society (NSLPS)
URL: http://www.nslps.com/
DESCRIPTION: This is a great website with information (now this may seem odd) about Nova Scotia Lighthouses. This site actually has a great deal of information on this lighthouse heavy island in the Atlantic. For each of the lighthouses on Nova Scotia, there is historical and technical information on the lights. Additionally, there is a list of lighthouses that you can visit, extensive photos, news, and a research and preservation section that includes an essay on why "Canada Needs a Lighthouse Protection Act."
