The truth of the matter is, we will probably not see a classroom strategy that goes for less test and teacher talking at us and the system staying the way it is. This is especially true at the University of Michigan because it is a traditional place, it has to uphold certain aspects of the universities. Plus this university, as much as we want to believe, is not the front-runner in creative thinking. I say this because as a whole we are known for putting young people in the world to become CEO's, neurosurgance, and stock-brokers. Not for people who are poets, muscians, and acotrs (exclude Lucy Lu). Plus the system in place works: they want to churn out people who get jobs and that's is what the University does. So why, at least in the presidents eyes, would you change up your strategy. For these two reasons I think that you should no t hold your breath for any changes.

The truth of the matter? What about the fact of the matter that the system is broken? The education system in general needs help. Speaking to the TRUTH of the matter, the system we're using has not kept ace with the society that has grown around it. As far as saying the system works, that statement could not be further from the truth. Our country is on the cusp of recession, unemployment and poverty levels have steadily risen over the past decade, and most importantly, the people are unhappy and unsatisfied with the situation. You talk about careers as CEO's, neuroSURGEONS, and stock-brokers, yet you fail to mention the key component to being successful in any of those fields is experience. Many people might excel while studying business THEORY, but we measure their success by their applications of said theory in the years AFTER GRADUATION. Graduates do indeed secure jobs, but let us consider the type of jobs. The average American undergraduate can to receive between 24,500 and 50,000 dollars in the first five years after graduation. The average industrial manufacturing job starts at 34,500. If you factor in the debt the average student assumes and the expected pay raise and tenure of the high school graduate working the manufacturing job, in regards to total amount earned, the college graduate will not surpass the "blue-collar worker" for 14 years. Of course, this is the average, but these figures make a statement. The system IS NOT working. First, we need to understand that not every student wants or is meant to go to college. For those who consider that statement offensive, it is only so if you consider those who don't go to college of lesser value than those who do. Second, the curriculum focus and classroom atmosphere must change. We need an increased emphasis on computer, micro-processor, digital, electronic, etc. technology. The modern University, and the education system in general, continues to teach with rules made during an analog era and fails to recognize that we now live in a digital world.
