Hi All,

In order to help you to track your academic requirements and make sure that you are on the right track for graduation, SI and the University offer some academic planning tools.

SI Tracking and Planning Sheets (TAPS) are worksheets that can help you plan and track your coursework to meet degree and specialization requirements. TAPS are available from the SI Web site: http://www.si.umich.edu/msi/taps/. Be sure to view both your specialization TAPS and the accompanying page which is the MSI Core Requirements and Degree Summary TAPS. Please NOTE that all students must complete 48 credits and core degree requirements. Please keep in mind, when courses are waived, you must still fulfill the credits that have been waived. Only the course has been waived, NOT the credits. If you have a specialization, you also need to meet the specialization requirements. You MUST achieve at least a B average (3.0) to graduate.

In addition, an online degree audit tool is available through Wolverine Access for students who entered AFTER Fall 2007 . Please remember that this tool provides general guidance for you to track your progress toward degree and specialization requirements. The degree online audit is based on the actual coursework you complete. Some aspects of the online degree audit must be entered manually by SI student services staff (Andrea Rotter), such as a course waiver. Thus your online degree audit may not be completely accurate until these items have been entered into the system. To view your online degree audit, use the following navigation:

Wolverine Access -> Student Business -> Log In -> Degree Progress/Graduation -> My Academic Requirements

Please remember that this online audit is NOT official. It is intended as a general guide to your academic progress. The School of Information will still complete an official graduation audit when you apply for graduation. However, if you see any problems with your online degree audit or if you have any questions, please contact me or Andrea Rotter. You should check your unofficial transcript and online degree audit regularly, and you should meet with faculty and Xiao-wen regularly as well.

Changing or adding a Specialization
You are encouraged to wait until after your first semester of enrollment to formally change or add specializations. You MUST submit a request to either change or add a specialization no later than the semester before the one in which you plan to graduate, or graduation maybe delayed. To change a specialization, send an e-mail to si.registrar@umich.edu and include your name, U-M ID number, current specialization, new specialization requested, and your expected semester of graduation. To add the second specialization, you must meet with Senior Academic Advisor Xiao-wen Zou (zxwen@umich.edu. )

Please note that the Tailored program requirements on the SI web site indicate the following:

As a student in the tailored MSI program, you must submit a one- to three-page statement that describes:
•	your academic and professional career goals,
•	a framework of types of courses that will assist you in realizing these goals, and
•	specific SI courses and cognate courses that you have taken or are considering.

You should update this plan each term with your advisor at the time of advising and should submit it via E-mail to the faculty coordinator of the Tailored Program. The plan:
1.	should include a list of courses you have completed and
2.	must indicate approval of your advisor.
**Official status in the Tailored degree program is not complete until the statement has been approved. Your statements, along with your TAPS sheet, will be part of your graduation audit as you approach completion of your degree.

Specialization requirement waivers or substitutions:

Faculty coordinator of the specialization ( for 2010-2011)
ARM - David Wallace
HCI - Mark Newman
LIS – Karen Markey
IEM – Rahul Sami
IPoL – Steven Jackson
SC – Eytan Adar
IAR – Lada Adamic
PI – Paul Conway
CI – Paul Edwards
SLM – Kristin Fontichiaro
Tailored – Chuck Severance

Programming requirement for certain specializations:
Mark Newman http://mwnewman.people.si.umich.edu/programmingRequirement.html

Statistics requirement for certain specializations:
Lada Adamic http://www-personal.umich.edu/~ladamic/courses/statswaiver.html

Management distribution requirement:
Doug Van Houweling http://www.si.umich.edu/msi/msi-reqs.htm

Methods distribution requirement:
Mark Ackerman http://www.si.umich.edu/msi/msi-reqs.htm

Please note that faculty will send the approvals to si.registrar@umich.edu, then these are recorded in the online degree audit.

Cognate Credits
We require every MSI student to complete at least three credit hours (maximum six) of external cognate coursework at the graduate level with a grade of B- or better. You don’t need faculty approval for your external cognate credits. We continue to use Rackham's list as our general reference since it is the most comprehensive one. Any Rackham approved graduate level course can count as an external cognate (see https://secure.rackham.umich.edu/academic_information/programs/#annarbor ). Also, any cross listed course can count as long as SI is not the home department. (See the SI class Schedule's special notes about the home department http://web.si.umich.edu/courses_New/term-sched-columns.cfm?passTerm=Winter&passYear=2011 ).

Some SI students have recommended courses as potentially useful cognate courses ( see http://www.si.umich.edu/msi/cognates.htm ). The MSI specialization(s) of those who recommended a cognate course is listed with the course. If a specific instructor was recommended, his or her name is also included. Please note that the listings and descriptions on this list are recommendations from master's students. The School of Information is not officially endorsing or recommending specific courses for cognate credit. Consult your advisor before signing up for one of these student recommended courses.

For now and in the future, if you have any additional or new courses to recommend, please send them to me and include the course title, recommender's specialization, term taken, instructor taken and comment. We need to update this list regularly.

Please see the links below regarding MSI degree requirement and academic advising:

MYERS LIBRARY SCIENCE SCHOLARSHIP AVAILABLE

The Napoleon Public Library Board of Trustees would like to announce the availability of the Rachael Bradley Myers and Dayl S. Myers Scholarship in memory of their son, Joseph Bradley Myers. In 1988, the Library received $75,346.31 from the Myers estate. The principal is invested and the interest income may be used annually at the discretion of the Trustees to provide a scholarship or scholarships to aid a person or persons pursuing a fifth year degree or Master’s degree in Library Science. For 2011, $2,000.00 will be disbursed for qualified MLIS candidates in accordance with the Library Board’s decision.

Dayl and Rachael Myers grew up in Napoleon and graduated from Napoleon High School in 1914. Dayl was a telephone engineer for Bell laboratories for thirty-five years. They lived in Towaco, New Jersey, but returned to Napoleon in 1960 upon Dayl’s retirement. Their later years were spent in St. Petersburg, Florida.
To apply for the Myers scholarship, applicants must send a resume and letter of intent or essay concerning career goals to Napoleon Public Library, 310 W. Clinton Street, Napoleon, Ohio 43545 by May 1, 2011. Proof of admission to Library School must be included.
Since the Myers family was native to Henry County, the Library Board feels preference should be given to Henry County residents who apply. A personal interview with the Library Board on June 7, 2011 may be required also. The scholarship winner will be required to give a detailed account of expenditures and complete the program within three years.

If prospective applicants have any questions, or desire more information please contact Betsy Eggers at 419-592-2531.

My name is Steve Lorenz, and I am a librarian in central North Carolina. I also have the great privilege of serving as the co-chair of the selection committee for the Miriam Braverman Memorial Prize, an award given each year by the Progressive Librarians Guild (PLG) for the best graduate student essay about some aspect of the social responsibilities of librarians, libraries or librarianship. The 2011 Braverman Prize includes a $300 stipend for travel expenses to the ALA Annual Conference in New Orleans, and the winning essay will also be published in the Summer 2011 issue of Progressive Librarian. The winner, and their LIS program also gain publicity through our award announcements.

Along with my selection committee co-chair, Sarah Clark, we are writing to ask for your help in publicizing the Braverman contest to the students in your Library and Information Science program. Attached you will find the call for submissions, which I would ask you to kindly post on bulletin boards around your campus. The call for submissions is also available at <a href="http://<http://connect.ala.org/node/95924>"><http://connect.ala.org/node/95924>. Please feel free to distribute this call for submissions as widely as possible among your faculty, students and associates.

As the honorable mention Braverman award recipient in 2010, I was asked to join the committee this year and accepted enthusiastically. The contest offers an excellent opportunity for socially-minded, politically conscious LIS students to make a mark in the field by getting published and meeting other progressively minded librarians and library students. As I am sure you know, it also reflects very positively on the winning essayist's LIS program. I was very proud to help bring attention by my honor-winning essay to North Carolina Central University's SLIS program a year ago, and I know NCCU SLIS Dean Irene Owens was very pleased to have it.

Please feel free to contact me by email:stevelorz@gmail.com or phone (919-536-9005) if you have any questions about the contest. I thank you in advance for whatever you are able to do to spread the word about this exciting opportunity.

Yours sincerely,

It is designed to amplify the voices of between 90 and 130 librarians, teachers, graduate students, journalists, technologists, scholars and citizens in dialog, discussion and work.
The event is immediately before the National Conference for Media Reform, in Boston, April 8-10. (<ahref="http://conference.freepress.net ">http://conference.freepress.net )

Hi everyone!

It is time to consider meeting with your faculty advisor before you register for the Winter 2011 semester.

There are several things that I'd like you to do in the next few days. Faculty advisors will be posting an online calendar of their schedules for November 8 to November 19. They will also indicate times that they are available.

Once you have signed-up for an appointment, I'd like you to prepare for your advising appointment by completing the TAPS (Tracking and Planning Sheet). You will need to bring your TAPS with you to your appointment. The TAPS and the SI course schedule are available on the SI Web site http://www.si.umich.edu/msi/taps/ and http://www.si.umich.edu/courses/. If you are in the Tailored program and are planning on taking courses, please bring your statement to your faculty advisor for review before submitting the statement to the Tailored program coordinator, Professor Chuck Severance. Students in the School Media Specialization MUST see Professor Karen Markey and Clinical Assistant Professor Kristin Fontichiaro.

If you will be graduating in December 2010, you will want to view your transcript using Wolverine Access. In preparation for graduation, you will need to:

1.	Make sure that you are in the specialization that you are going to pursue. You can verify this by checking your unofficial transcript or degree online audit.

2.	Make sure that you do not have any Incompletes ("I") on your transcript. Be sure that you meet all of the requirements for graduation.

3.	Make sure that you have documentation to support any items which may need explaining in a graduation audit. Please print your unofficial transcript, fill out the TAPS and bring them to your advising appointment with you.

Here is a list of specializations and advisors to help guide you in your advisor selection.

Master’s of Science in Information
Tailored - Chuck Severance, Victor Rosenberg, Ixchel Faniel, Bob Frost or faculty related to your own interest

School Media Specialists - Karen Markey, Kristin Fontichiaro
Students with Research Asst Appts. - The faculty with whom you are working

Library and Information Services - Karen Markey , Victor Rosenberg, Soo Young Rieh, Tiffany Veinot

Archives and Records Management - Paul Conway, David Wallace, Beth Yakel

Human Computer Interaction - Tom Finholt, Mark Ackerman, Michael McQuaid , Mark Newman, Eytan Adar

Information Economics Management Policy	- Paul Resnick, Steve Jackson, Ixchel Faniel, Rahul Sami

Information Economics for Management - Paul Resnick, Rahul Sami, Erin Krupka

Information Analysis and Retrieval - Lada Adamic, Qiaozhu Mei, Eytan Adar, Mick McQuaid

Information Policy - Steven Jackson, Victor Rosenberg, David Wallace

Community Informatics -	Paul Resnick, Steven Jackson

Social Computing - Eytan Adar, Lada Adamic, Paul Resnick, Erin Krupka

Preservation of Information - Beth Yakel, David Wallace, Paul Conway

Faculty members soon will post their available times for those weeks to our online advising scheduling tool. Starting November 3, 2010, you'll be able to visit faculty advising calendars on the SI intranet to sign up for appointments.

HOW TO USE THE ADVISING APPOINTMENT SCHEDULING

QUICK Version
Go to http://si.umich.edu/stulife/advising.htm . Read up. Click through to the "Online Advising Scheduling Tool." Log in (U-M Kerberos). Select a faculty name from the drop-down. When the calendar opens, click on a green, "available" time slot. Complete the brief form.

DETAILED Version
1) Read about the advising process -- including the Advising FAQ -- at http://si.umich.edu/stulife/advising.htm.
2) On that page, click on the "Online Advising Scheduling Tool" link.
3) You will be prompted to log in using your U-M Kerberos login. Do so.
4) Once logged in, select the name of a faculty advisor you would like to consult from the drop-down list. Click the "Check advisor's availability" button.
5) You will be taken to the faculty member's Preregistration Advising Calendar. Available advising sessions will be shaded green on the calendar. To sign up for one of these available sessions, click on the green-shaded rectangle for that session.
6) A small confirmation window will open. You'll have options to
- type a note for the faculty member
- have an app't confirmation and iCal invite e-mailed to you, and
- have the appointment copied to your Google Calendar.
Click the "Schedule this session" button to confirm the appointment. If you type a note, the faculty member (and only the faculty member) will see you note when checking his or her calendar. If you check the "add to my Google Calendar" box, a new window will pop up with a form from Google, so be sure "www.schoolofinformation.info" is added to your "allow pop-ups from" list.
7) After you click the "Schedule this session" button, the small confirmation window will close and the faculty calendar page will refresh. You should then see a form button in the time slot you chose that says "Appt: Your Name Here."

Make a note of your appointment in your own calendar, of course, if you haven't already. Or import to your calendar the iCal attachment that comes with your e-mailed confirmation.

You're done.

To cancel an appointment, click the form button for that appointment on the faculty calendar page. A small confirmation window will open. It will include an e-mail link to the faculty member, so you can let him or her know of the cancellation (good form, generally). Then click the "Remove this appointment from the faculty calendar" button. The small window will close, the faculty calendar page will refresh, and the appointment will have been deleted.
