Virtual Travel

I am always looking for new travel ideas on the web. I used to read a lot of random travel articles. Recently, I found an awesome Web 2.0 travel site that has traveler reviews on just about every part of the world. The site is named appropriately Virtual Tourist.

I spend a few hours at the website so far and only scratched the surface of possible places I may visit in the future. This travel site is definitely one of the most comprehensive I have ever found. It has detailed information on traveling just about anywhere in the world – from Detroit, Michigan to Auckland, New Zealand.

Finding a Hotel in Edmonton

Early this summer we will visit Edmonton, Canada to see some old friends that moved there a few years ago. Unfortunately they have a small home so we decided it would be best to stay in a nearby hotel during our short stay.

Pre-Internet, it used to be a very difficult to find a nice hotel when traveling to a new destination. Now things are much easier, whenever I travel to a new destination I look for a quality hotel website that specializes in reviewing hotels in my destination city.

I used this strategy and found this great Edmonton Hotels website that was just perfect. The site offered me some great hotel suggestions that helped me to quickly book a room at a great Edmonton hotel. I also liked that website offers some excellent Edmonton attraction and entertainment ideas that we can check out to make the most of our stay.

New Travel Search engine

I recently discovered a new travel search site called Kayak.com that has lots of cool automated search features to help you find the cheapest flight, car, or hotel. The site is kind of like Orbitz, or Expedia with more of a Web 2.0 look and feel (although it is not a true web 2.0 website). I love their smart travel search options.

However, I was disappointed today when searching for a care for my trip to Florida next week, the daily price was $15 dollars higher then the price on orbitz. I guess the big boys still have the clout to cut the best deals with the car rental companies. Still give the site a try, I think you like it.

Time to buy New Travel Luggage

Since I plan on doing quite a bit of travel, I figure it’s time for me to get a new set of matching luggage. My current hand-me-down luggage is extremely beat up and completely mismatched (plus I hear you can get suitcases with wheels now!)

I would like to get a nice but economical set that will serve multiple purposes. Whether I am taking a 2 week trip to Europe, or a short weekend in Chicago, I want to be able to mix and match any set I buy to make it meet my needs.

I was doing some research on buying travel luggage and found this great post on Buying Travel Luggage that provides a check list of things I should think about when luggage shopping. They also have a luggage review section that gave me a good idea of what is currently available.

I hope when I finally do get my luggage I can keep it full and moving, rather then sitting in the corner of the basement. Now if I could just find out where I could buy a Magic Carpet!

Florida vacation homes

This time of year, I love Florida and Disney World, and if you have ever been there you know how expensive lodging can get. I discovered long ago, if you have a family or large group that will be going on a Disney World adventure, the best way to go is by renting one of the many available Florida vacation homes.

In popular areas, like Disney, there are often lots of great places on the market and by using websites like the one above, you can find great deals and see pictures of potential rentals without leaving your office chair.

The great thing about staying in a rental home during your vacation, is that you literally have all the comforts of home and more. A fridge, washer/dryer, stove, cable TV, pool etc… are all available to help you save money on all the little things that tend to add up when you travel. Unless I am going on a national park type vacation, I love renting a home and getting the true ‘flavor’ of the area I am visiting.
