Grant Opportunities: Second Life and Facebook at SPH
We are seeking interested SPH students to partner with Public Health Library & Informatics on two different UM Digital Media Commons technology grant proposals. We are looking for students who understand health education and who are interested in using social technologies for academic purposes. Graduate students from the School of Information will be assisting with the technologies involved. There's no need for you to have tech skills in order to participate.
The first grant proposal would explore using Second Life for health education and promotion. (If you are unfamiliar with Second Life, this video provides an overview of how a virtual world can be used for science learning online [http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EfsSGBraUhc].) The exact scope of the project proposal is yet to be decided- we want your input.
The second proposal that we would like to submit would be to create Facebook applications and Google Gadgets for health education and promotion. Again, the exact scope of the project proposal is yet to be decided- we want your input.
The deadline for proposals is November 1 and we would like to hear from interested students by September 28th.
This is the 4th annual Call For Proposals for GROCS (Grant Opportunities [Collaborative Spaces]) from the Digital Media Commons, funded by the Office of the Provost.
Since 2005, GROCS has granted $175,000 to fund inspiring and original projects conceived and developed by U-M students. To date, 15 interdisciplinary teams (including undergraduate and graduate/Ph.D. students) have explored the potential for transforming learning environments using the newest digital media tools.

Google Gadget: Upcoming PHLI Workshops
As part of my work at the PHLI, I'm trying to increase the visibility of the library to students, staff, and faculty. I've been working on a simple "proof of concept" widget that will display the latest upcoming workshops being offered by the library.
I've recently completed a Google Gadget that allows for this functionality, and a Facebook application should be forthcoming.
The Gadget comes in multiple flavors. Click here for the version that lets you stick the gadget into your personalized Google homepage (iGoogle).
