Urban Screens

Mirjam Struppek's Urban Screens project investigates "how the currently commercial use of outdoor screens can be broadened with cultural content". Quite interesting, especially the emphasis on the "public sphere" -- she is interested in "screens that support the idea of public space as space for creation and exchange of culture, strengthening a local economy and the formation of public sphere".

From the web page, it seems that they had a conference in 2005 apparently -- no mention of anything after that, though.

One comment that I have is that visual display related articles (such as this one) almost always seem to focus on urban spaces. But surely, even in rural areas, there are locations to which people congregate/converge, at certain times (e.g. they go to church; or, they go to sporting events, etc.) And on all these occasions public displays may be useful.
