Shapiro Library - 50th Anniversary

The Shapiro Library building is fifty years old!

The Shapiro building originally housed the Undergraduate Library, which opened to the public on January 16, 1958. The new library cost approximately $3.1 million, and would be open until midnight six days a week. For the first time at a UM library, all of the stacks were open to students.

In 1995 the building was renovated and expanded, and reopened on May 19, 1995, with the Science Library on the third and fourth floors.

We have continued to update and improve resources and services such as the Adaptive Technology Computing Site and the Askwith Media Library. We look forward to continuing to serve your research and information needs for decades to come.

New Look for Science Library Web Site

Over the past few months, the Science Library, along with the larger MLibrary system, has been updating our web pages to give them a consistent look and set of navigational elements. Recently we have added this new banner to better emphasize the unity of our many library units across campus. Now, when visiting any library web page, you have access to all libraries and library services from the top right of the page, including Mirlyn, Search Tools, and the library web site search.

Just below the site search, in the gray navigation bar, you can access all 23 MLibraries, ask a librarian a question with Ask Us, and, of course, get help.

Standardizing navigation is just the first step. Over the coming months, we will be building a new MLibrary site that will make it easier than ever to find the information you need.
