The Library has just added some major reference works from the publisher Wiley that may be of interest to you. Access is already live at the publisher’s web site http://www3.interscience.wiley.com.proxy.lib.umich.edu/ and the links will be added to our Mirlyn catalog in the near future.

We regret to inform you that, after careful review and consideration, the University of Michigan Library has decided not to renew our online access to the publication Scientific American.

LIbrary Extends Hours for Exams

Once again, the Shapiro Library will stay open 24 hours most weeknights for study days and exams. Our extended hours begin Sunday, April 17 and continue through the last day of exams, Thursday, April 19.

Sundays: Now with 17% More Science Reference

The Science Library reference desk will be open from 12-4pm on Sunday for the remainder of the term. Stop by and ask us a question!

Enriching Scholarship: May 3-7, Save the Date

This May, the Library will again join with other members of the UM Teaching and Technology Collaborative to sponsor Enriching Scholarship. This event is a week of free workshops which explore the effective integration of information and technology with teaching, learning and research.

Registration will open Monday, April 5.

Reminder: Exchange Your Old Copy Cards

As you know, the Library's new copy machines accept MCards, eliminating the need to bring cash and to buy a separate card for copying. If you still have any of the old white copy cards, you can exchange them - but only thru the end of Winter Term.

Women In Science Book Display

March is Women's History Month. The Shapiro Science Library has created a book display celebrating scientific contributions made by women.

Find the display in our Current Periodical Reading Room, on the curved shelves facing the entrance. This display is separate from our New Books display; these books are not new, and you can remove them from the shelf and check them out right now.

Celebrating Faculty Achievement!

Join us Wed, Feb 24 in the Shapiro Science Library's Shien-Ming Wu Reading Room as we celebrate faculty achievements as recorded in our display of science journal and book covers. The event goes from 4-6 PM, with remarks at 4:30 by Stephen Forrest, Vice President for Research and William Gould Dow Collegiate Professor of Electrical Engineering.

Google Scanning Continues in Science Library

Starting January 20, Google has been scanning books from the Shapiro Science Library for the Google Book Project. The work has been proceeding quickly and smoothly.

Please see our webpage with more information about which books are out for scanning now, when you may expect them back, and what to do if you need a book which is being scanned. We update this page for you daily.

Science in 15 Minutes

Join us Wed, Feb 17, for Mass Extinctions in 15 Minutes with Dr. Catherine Badgley, Professor of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology.
Dr Badgley will speak at 3 PM on the Shapiro Library first floor - for 15 minutes.

Trial Access to CRCnetBASE

The UM Libraries have arranged a one month trial for all of the CRCnetBASE products. We already subscribe to some; this trial includes all.

You can access our trial subscription to the database via our Trial Subscriptions page through Thursday, March 4. Please send any comments to your subject specialist.

UM Physics Faculty quoted in New York Times

From today's University Record Update:
An article in The New York Times included comments from Gordon Kane, professor of physics, and Aaron Pierce, assistant professor of physics, who spoke about the possibilities that may grow out of experiments planned for CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

Online access to more ebooks from Wiley and Elsevier

Along with the CIC Center for Library Initiatives, the University of Michigan Library has purchased online access to many 2008-2009 ebooks from the publisher Wiley and the 2008-2010 ebook collection from Elsevier. (Exceptions apply, such as books in series and some standard textbooks.)

You can access the Wiley ebooks through Wiley Interscience.

You can access the Elsevier titles through ScienceDirect.

Records for individual ebooks will be added to Mirlyn soon.

(Off campus access to these ebooks will require a valid UM login.)
