Service Changes at Science Library

In order to better serve all of our clients, the Science Library is changing the way that it allocates staff time for various activities. This has resulted in some changes to our service offerings, effective September 1st.

Circulation Services:
Circulation and stacks services in the Shapiro and Hatcher Libraries are consolidating into a single unit. As a result, the main circulation desk for the entire Shapiro Library building will now be the 1st floor desk. Patron holds and permanent reserve items that patrons could previously access at the Science circulation desk will now be available at the 1st floor circulation desk. The main circulation desk in the Science Library, near the 3rd floor elevators, will be closing effective September 1st; the reference desk at that location will remain open (see below for more details). The auxiliary 3rd floor circulation desk, located near the connector to West Hall, will be open during the hours that the West Hall connector is open (in general M-Th 8 AM-6 PM, F 8 AM-5 PM). Science Library materials may also be checked out at the Shapiro 1st floor circulation desk, or at the Hatcher Library circulation desks.

Reference services:
The Science Library is shifting its reference efforts toward increased personal interaction with faculty and graduate students in their office and laboratory locations. As a result, we will be decreasing the hours that the 3rd floor reference desk is staffed during Fall semester. New reference desk hours will be M-F 10 AM-5 PM. The Library also offers online reference through its Ask a Librarian service (Sun 2 PM-midnight, M-Th 10 AM-midnight, F 10 AM-5 PM).

We welcome your feedback on these changes. Click here to find contact information for your subject librarian, or email the Science Library at sciencelibrary@umich.edu.
