A call for Detroit, MI-based designers
From the IxDA listserv...
Thanks to Dr. Elizabeth Tunstall, organizer of the US National Design Policy Initiative, for bringing to our attention a Detroit-area opportunity. Interaction designers have an opportunity to be involved with an initiative out of the US Department of Commerce, aimed to help American businesses.
The project: The Dept. of Commerce is piloting in Detroit a cross-governmental department "...one-stop shop that will provide a single point of contact for every Commerce program available to business owners. This initiative will work with state and local agencies, academia, labor and other key stakeholders to provide a unified, integrated resource to grow and sustain jobs." (Quoting Secretary Locke)
There are three components which the US National Design Policy Initiative would like to provide expertise, and three organizations (including IxDA) that have offered to help facilitate:
1. The environmental design of the location, including signage, branding, etc. How can we help businesses navigate the new space? How can we orient it around the right process (wayfinding not just the space but the processes of using the services in the space)? How do we ensure that it is ADA compliant, etc.?
SEGD (Society for Environmental Graphic Design) will lead the assessment of the space, provide recommendations on how to improve it, and work to facilitate those changes.
2. Service design, which is the more holistic mapping of the people's experiences of the services that Commerce provides in the location, what can be improved, what new services can emerge, and how should they be strategically implemented. AIGA is leading in this area.
3. Web/interaction design. What are the right digital approaches to bring the various websites and their information together for businesses? IxDA is who should be leading in this area.
So, are you an interaction designer in and around Detroit? If not, do you know anyone who is? Please forward, and email me directly by Friday of this week (Sept 11) if this project sounds of interest to you.
President, Interaction Design Association (IxDA)
