Doing More with Less: Enhancing your Library’s Reach and Resources
Wednesday, October 6, 2010 – Plymouth District Library – 9am-1pm
Library budgets all over the country are shrinking, and Southeast Michigan is no exception. Libraries must learn how to be resilient, flexible organizations, drawing on new sources of funding and stretching limited budgets further. To learn more about innovative fundraising and how to continue to draw new audiences to your library, join us for TLN’s Annual Fall Workshop, presented by the TLN Adult Services Committee. Our topic this year is “Doing More with Less: Enhancing your Library’s Reach and Resources.”
Session 1: 9:30-10:30
Shelley Gach-Droz and Charlaine Ezell, members of the board of Friends of Michigan Libraries, will present "Friends for Life: Libraries and Friends Groups Working Together". This presentation highlights the three roles of Friends Groups and how they are changing and the working relationships between libraries, directors and Friends.
Session 2: 10:35-11:35
Our second speaker is Krissa Rumsey, grant writer and administrator at the Washtenaw Community College foundation. Her presentation, “Grant-getting: It’s All About Relationships,” will help you debunk the mystery of seeking and writing grants and understand how to successfully draft, submit, and receive grant money for your library. This session will also provide an overview of the world of grants and the pieces that must be in place to attract the attention of potential funders. Knowing where to look for funding and developing a funder-focused approached to grant-seeking can help increase your grant-writing success rate.
Session 3: 12:00-1:00
Shari Fesko, a teen librarian at the Southfield Public Library will share her fresh perspective on “Programming on a Shoestring Budget”, and discuss a variety of economical, in-house programs that are easy to coordinate and host and that appeal to adult patrons. You’ll leave with new ideas for adult programming and strategies for attracting new audiences to your library.
Workshop registration includes continental breakfast and workshop materials. The program runs from 9am until 1pm on Wednesday, October 6th, with check-in starting at 9:00am and the first workshop session beginning at 9:30. Rates are as follows: $15.00 for TLN-affiliated libraries, $20.00 for attendees from libraries not part of TLN, and $10.00 for library science students.
Registration deadline is September 30, 2010.
