Just a few tips for SI Students that are planning on attending the Career Fair next week:

1. Arrive early. The Career Fair starts at 10am and that is when recruiters are energized, interested, and haven’t met several hundred students already. If you can, talk to the recruiters early on, then go back once more before you leave to ensure that you left an impression.

2. Be prepared to talk about the School of Information and bridge the gap between your skills/abilities/specialization and what their company does (this may involve you doing some research on the companies prior to the fair). The recruiters are there to recruit engineering students, but you too are of value to them. Sometimes, you just need to make it known to them what that value is. It’s ideal to be able to tell them what position in their company is a fit for your skill set.

3. Collect business cards. This gives you the opportunity to follow up with everyone that you meet, especially if they are only recruiting for engineering students. You can later email them and ask the recruiter to put you in touch with someone in a department more appropriate to what you are studying here at SI. Or, you can just send a thank you.

IMPORTANT! The CoE Engineering Career Resource Center hosts an online recruiting system similar to iTrack called HireMe. When you meet with employers at the fair, they may say, “Sign up for an interview in HireMe.” However, non-CoE students are not allowed to use HireME, so be sure to tell the recruiter that you cannot do so and need to set up an interview outside of that system.
