Career Fair Preparation Tips and Advice to make the most of your time (even if you only have 30-minutes to spare!)

• Recruiters say research is the key to a successful job
search. So…stand out from the crowd by taking their advice…research organizations of interest ahead of time. Not a lot of spare time? Pick your top 5 organizations, do the research then add more as you can.
What do I wear? Suits are always appropriate. Business casual is okay too. Keep in mind, however, “business casual” doesn’t mean “classroom casual.” Organizations say first impressions count, so give some thought to what you wear.
• There’s so many organizations here… where do I start? (watch Mango video)
1. At the Fair, get familiar with the layout: take a minute to review the Fair booklet and room map.
2. When you’re ready, head for your first organization, introduce yourself with a smile and a handshake and begin your “commercial.”
• What do I bring to the Fair? Bring copies of your resume, business cards (if you have them) and pen/notebook. You’ll want your resume as you’re chatting with organizations and the other items may come in handy. If possible, leave your backpack at home—there is no storage space.
• Before the Fair, develop your “two-minute commercial”: a brief overview of you—your background and career interests.
• I only have 30 minutes between classes… should I still come? Yes! but maximize your time by checking the list of organizations before Fair and selecting your top 3-5 organizations. At the Fair, register and head straight to your top choice organization. If there’s a long line, move on to the next one. 30 minutes is plenty of time to connect with 2-3 organizations.
