Read below if you are interested in joining the solar car team. Several statistics students have been very involved with this effort in the past. It is a great opportunity.

Dear Stats Students,

Over twenty years ago, the Michigan Solar Car Team began to build solar powered vehicles with the aim of competing in a national and an international race. Now, 6 National Championships and 4, third-in-the-world finishes later, our goal has changed. In 2011, we aim to be the first American team in 14 years to win the World Championship.

In order to reach this goal, we need Strategists. The race itself is an 1800-mile trek through the middle of the Australian Outback and it is very competitive. For this reason, we have team members dedicated to developing a comprehensive race strategy from day one. The current Michigan strategy involves developing mathematical models of each system of the vehicle and computer software to simulate the race. Various optimization techniques are used in conjunction with the simulations to minimize the total time spent racing (the metric used to determine the winner).

We are particularly looking for dedicated stats students to work in conjunction with computer science students to perfect this software and an encompassing, race-winning strategy. Following is a brief description of the area a stats student could be working in:

Vehicle Simulation

Strategists specializing in Vehicle Simulation/Modeling will help develop software to predict the performance of the solar car. These models will be used with optimization software to determine the optimal velocity set point for the solar car in quasi-real time during the race. In addition, these strategists will conduct tests with the solar car to validate and improve models. This work will expose students to technical material in the areas of optimization and systems engineering typically seen in graduate coursework or projects. Strategists in this area are typically interested in mathematics, physics and/or programming.

Those interested in receiving more information about this opportunity or would like to apply for a Race Strategist position on the Michigan Solar Car Team should directly contact me (rdkramer@umich.edu). Ideally, candidates for these positions will express interest within the next week, as we will be holding an informational Strategy meeting on Tuesday, 1/18.

Go Fast, Go Smooth, Go Blue!
