Togo Soccer Team Ban
The Togo national soccer team experienced great tragedy on Jan 8th 2010 when a terrorist attack killed two members of their delegation. For safety concerns, the team decided to pull out of the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. Now it looks like that decision will have lasting effects. In what the sports community is calling a "stunning" and "jaw dropping" ruling, the national soccer federation has banned them from tournament play for the next two years. FInally to add the cherry on top, the federation also fined the Togo team 50,000 for failing to play. I find this decision process clinically insane. You're not only punishing the entire team, but a nation as well. Where soccer acts as an outlet and glimpse of hope for some, the Togo faithful will have nothing to cheer about for a long time.
