Sound Poem
When we listened to Kurt Schwitter's sound poem in class, I found myself frustrated. I realized that I don't like listening to something that I don't understand. This is not surprising to me as I have never enjoyed studying foreign languages. I think the beauty of language is our ability to understand it. I like to speak what I know and listen to what I know as well. This may seem closed minded but on the contrary, we can learn more when we understand a language. This being said, I do appreciate that sound poems are a form of art used to challenge traditional language and transcend our sphere of comprehension. I think it is an interesting concept, but not one that I would be interested in exploring.

Earl Nightingale Stuff
1. All I know about Earl Nightingale is that he spoke on the radio in the 50s. I'm not really sure what about but apparently it was important. I'll have to decide for myself. I'm not sure why we're supposed to listen to this either. I don't know how it relates to my digital class but perhaps by the end I'll understand why. I'm sure it's meaningful and inspirational and all that - we'll see.
2. Some important stuff from the speech: Why is there such a difference between what we intend and what we accomplish? Success is the progressive realization of a worthy ideal. One must know where he/she is going in order to achieve that. The opposite of courage is conformity. Everyone is dependent on someone else for life's necessities. We do not become independent in the riches land ever. Why do these people conform? They blame exterior forces. 19/20 people have no idea why they get up to go to work every morning. Success is the person that does what he/she WANTS to do. Anyone who is doing deliberately a pre-determined job because that's what he deliberately decided to do. Don't compete, create. What do you want? Create a goal, plant it in your mind - the most important decision you'll ever make. Your goal will become a reality - it's a law.
3. I agree with pretty much all of this. We need direction. People should want to achieve something. Direction puts us where we need to go. I think most Americans don't have goals and thus don't amount to anything. Our society has been created so that people who are "helpless" get help. While that's all good to help people that need help, it creates a vicious cycle where people don't feel the need to help themselves because it is so easy to rely on others. Though I must admit, as a college student, I have been programmed to want to better myself. To want to get an education and achieve something, so I guess I don't really understand why someone would not want to do that for him/herself. All in all, it's a tough call to make because there are definitely two sides to every story.
