Labman 2011 presentation on Apache & Libstats
Thanks for attending! Not a ton of people did, but I was encouraged by the fact that people didn't get up and walk out.
UPDATE: For a brief, glorious moment, we were front page on our library's website. Our library generates all kinds of news every day, so it's been bumped, but you can read it here.
Here's the pre-configured XAMPP for Mac with PEAR::DB and libstats already included. 94MB, so if you're not on campus get a cup of coffee.
- Hosted at UM: http://www-personal.lib.umich.edu/~britainw/libstats/xampp-libstats.dmg

"I'm from Buenos Aires..."
"Starship Troopers" was a subtle parody of old 50s newsreels and I guess some kind of allegory between the old wars we fought and the one we were fighting when it came out about ten or fifteen years ago.
It also had NPH taunting a giant brain bug. Back then, those kind of things didn't win you Oscars [still don't].
In the aftermath of an alien attack on Argentina, the film's hero Johnny is featured on a TV newscast presenting the popular opinion when he announces "I'm from Buenos Aires, and I say we KILL 'EM ALL!"
I'm not really from Buenos Aires, and I generally wouldn't use this in a context that suggest something actually needs to be killed. I just like the fake-tough-guy sound of it.
PROTIP: When the movie came out in theaters, I had a Filipino friend who was furious that the Heinlein novel's Filipino protagonist became the white-bread Argentinian played by whoever that was.

[Dialogue spoken by... took me a few minutes to remember: Casper Van Dien. No Internet resources were used in the writing of this post.]

Another line from "Zoolander."
At the end of the film, his evil plot ruined, the villainous fashion designer portrayed by Will Ferrell begins to question Derek Zoolander's [Ben Stiller] talent as a male model, citing shortcomings nobody else seems to notice. His angry monologue ends with him bellowing "I feel like I'm taking CRAZY PILLS!"

"The Files Are In The Computer."
Being the first in an occasional series of explanations for phrases that I use in the course of my day.
If I'm fixing or not fixing your machine and you hear me say "The spreadsheet is in the computer, Derek," this is what I'm talking about:
There is a scene in the comedy "Zoolander" in which two characters are sent to an office with the orders to retrieve files that are "in the computer," a description they take literally and attempt to disassemble the computer on the desk in an homage to the simians at the beginning of "2001: A Space Odyssey."
