Favorite Food Movies (Ode to Flapjack)
I have always thought that it would be great if the Food Network would show movies about Food instead of those annoying competition shows that glamorize cakes that no one eats OR anything with Guy Fieri.
Anyway - here are the four food movies that I would watch tonight (if I could get the TV from the boys). This was inspired by my dog Flapjack, who loves food more than anything!
Tampopo (1985)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0092048/
NOTE: This is an amazing movie - the original Japanese noodle western. Also known as Dandelion, it follows the title character (Tampopo) learn from trucker the greatest way to create a fast-food noodle restaurant.
Big Night (1996)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0115678/
NOTE: This is not only one of the best food movies, but also one of the best movies...ever! Co-Directed by actors Campbell Scott & Stanley Tucci in their first directing role, it centers around a last-ditch effort by brothers (played by Tucci and Tony Shalhoub) to save their restaurant. Also features Marc Anthony, Ian Holm, Minnie Driver and Isabella Rossellini in this amazing ensemble cast.
Ratatouille (2007)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0382932/
NOTE: Pixar has yet to deliver a dud (though I am not crazy about Cars). This amazing movie brings together so many themes - but maybe the best one is summed up by Chef Gusteau's cookbook: "Anyone can cook." This includes a rat named Remy - who, despite his station in life, developed a great sense of culinary artistry. He pairs up with
Linguini, and without talking to each other, comes up with a brilliant way to help the young man cook! One of the best Pixar movies!
Like Water for Chocolate (1992)
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0103994/
NOTE: I have not seen this for a while, but this was one of my favorites way back when. I will have to see it again, but as I was coming up with this list - it was first and foremost in my mind - so I must have loved it!
Also found this great blog entry from Monsieur Anton about his top 10 food movies.
