Haiku for Today (MeLCat)
Colder than normal
When no students are about
Better use MeLCat
Was going to walk to Borders to get a travel book to Michigan's Thumb (Lake Huron). But it was too cold, so I turned back and ordered it on MeLCat. In a few days...I should get the book!

IUG Presentations on Milstats (Milstats 101 & 102)
Milstats Presentations given at IUG 2008 in Washington, D.C.
Program Title: Milstats 101: Introduction to Milstats
Program Coordinator: Corey Seeman
Coordinator Institution: Kresge Business Admin Library, University of Michigan
Millennium Statistics is a very powerful tool that enables libraries to create statistical reports with ease. MilStats is available in each Millennium program and offers the ability to save queries, save results, search by different types of records, re-run searches, and export reports easily into Excel or other programs. This session will give an introduction to Milstats and how libraries can utilize this powerful tool. This session will serve as a introduction to the program and showcase many basic features (with examples) to help people get started.
Program Title: Milstats: 102: Beyond the Basics with Milstats
Millennium Statistics is a very powerful tool that enables libraries to create statistical reports with ease. But it can do more than just count up records. In this presentation, we will look at Milstats beyond the basics and focus on some of the advanced functions that libraries can undertake, including: scheduling reports, working with periodic reports, running collection development queries, projecting budget increases, and fun with SCAT tables. This session will serve as a complement to "Milstats 101" and showcase some more powerful tools available to users.

IUG Sessions on Funds - Funds (Huh!): What are they good for!
Program Title: Funds (Huh!): What are they good for!
Program Coordinator: Corey Seeman
Coordinator Institution: Kresge Business Administration Library (Univ. of Michigan)
Presented at IUG 2008 in Washington, D.C. (April 2008)
Presentation Slides URL:
Session Description (100 word limit for program publication): Funds are the building blocks of Acquisitions - allowing us to pay for orders and report expenditures. But for many sites, the fund structure lacks the ability to truly capture the information that the library wants and needs. We will explore the role that funds play in Millennium and look at: changing funds, statistical and financial reporting; and matching the funds with the fiscal close method used at your institution. The learning objective is to be able to evaluate your fund structure and use to determine if your existing structure still meets your needs.

Special Libraries Association Paper - Almost an eJournal
This is a contributed paper for the Special Libraries Association meeting in Denver (June 4, 2007):
Title: Almost an eJournal: Using the Library Catalog for Local Hosting and Management of Electronic Periodicals
Abstract: In 2005, the Kresge Business Administration Library at the University of Michigan acquired a new electronic periodical for its collection that had to be locally hosted by the library and was not currently part of any article database. Pressed with a need to present this resource to users in a way that would facilitate and promote use, a plan was developed to create individual records for each issue of this periodical and place them into the library’s public catalog. The article describes the rationale for local hosting of electronic resources, licensing considerations, creating search and discovery opportunities for these items, the creation of library catalog records for the issues, workflow methods and the promotion for this material to the Ross School community. Also discussed will be the ways that this program will be expanded to showcase other resources for the library community.
This is not in the slides...but it was my epiphany while listening to the keynote with Former Vice President Al Gore. He said (paraphrased) that the librarians’ role is to find and "characterize" data/information for the public or our users. In turn, the librarians should "translate" it into the a way to make it accessible by the public. To a simple degree...this is my paper. I will try to get the exact phrasing and put it in the final paper.

IUG Presentation - “You Could Look it Up!” - Using Millennium Statistics
This is a presentation that I gave at the Innovative Users Group Conference in San Jose, California (May 14-17, 2007):
Title: “You Could Look it Up!” - Using Millennium Statistics
Abstract: Presentation from the 2007 Innovative Users Group Conference in San Jose, California (May 14-17, 2007). Millennium Statistics is a great tool that helps libraries create a large number of statistical reports with ease. MilStats (as it is known) is available in each Millennium program and offers the ability to save queries, save results, search by different types of records, re-run searches, and export reports easily into Excel or other programs. This session will give an overview of the features and functions of Millennium Statistics and show how to utilize this in your library.

Innovative Interfaces Academic Library Directors Symposium
For the Innovative Academic Library Directors Symposium, I appeared on the following panel discussion:
The ILS and Discovery-to-Delivery: An Innovative panel of senior managers providing insights into how Innovative's current product lines and development plans provide opportunities for libraries to enhance their user's discovery experience.
Panelists include:
Neil Block, VP Worldwide Sales (Innovative)
Corey Seeman, Kresge Business Administration Library, University of Michigan
This is the presentation topic I came up with: "The ILS and Discovery-to-Delivery: Late Night Thoughts on Silos, Scope, Sodoku and Simplicity"
Really do not have an abstract, but if I did, it would be about how we can promote creativity in the library and use our ILS (catalog) in ways that allow us to easily extend our reach to the patrons. I will try to expand on this theme later.
