Early Spring in Ann Arbor - Or About Those Wildflowers by Martha Cook Hall

On my daily walks across campus, I am never without my camera. And if you are into squirrels and think they are cute - then you might appreciate my ridiculously large number of photos that I have to share via flickr on this matter (All my Michigan Squirrel photos here).

But on my walk today - I noticed that the blue wildflowers that grow on the eastern side of the Cook Hall yard (think that is what it is called) are already up.

Here are all the wildflower photos from today (Monday March 19, 2012).

It got me thinking about previous years and when these came up. They are up just a short while and are so beautiful, especially when looking at the old iron gate that serves as a boundary marker.

In looking through my old photos - I found that the same flowers bloomed much much later (well, around 3 weeks) in recent years.

Here is April 9, 2009:

Here is April 12, 2011:

So it looks like these flowers are about three weeks ahead of themselves. Please keep in mind that the sample set is tiny and probably does not mean much. But one of the benefits of participating in flickr's Project365 (here are my photos) is that I have a really clear track to know when these things really happen. Otherwise, I might just muse...hey - these are coming up early.

Not sure what this means for the rest of the growing season in Michigan, but this is going to be a strange summer indeed.

Even this Chipmunk cannot believe what he is seeing:

University of Michigan Squirrel A-Z - A Web Picture Book

Over the past few years, I have spent a fair amount of time photographing the campus pets at the University of Michigan. These squirrels are all over campus and are a wonderful distraction.

NOTE: I have already made a few tweaks! - This is version 1.1 (10:45pm on 12/28/11)

Here are all my photos of squirrels at the University of Michigan (there are a lot)

Here are the 26 photos shown below on their flickr pages

Don't have room for this - but it might make for a nice cover:

Photos of Kresge Library's Green Roof

The Kresge Library has been undergoing quite a change over the summer. In addition to the new group study rooms on the second floor, we also have added a new toupee...well, green roof! Our green roof is part of the LEED Certification for the new home for the Ross School of Business building at the Ann Arbor Campus.

Here are some pictures during the installation of the sedum on the green roof.

If you are wondering what is a green roof, the benefits include:
-Returns less water to the sewer systems - less run-off
-Kresge Library's fourth floor should be cooler in the summer and warmer in the winter.
-Help filter pollutants and CO2 out of the air - instead of just adding heat into the environment.

Zingerman's - Just Amazing!

Great story from NPR's Weekend Edition.

Zingerman's: Not Your Grandfather's Deli
by Bonny Wolf

Weekend Edition Sunday, May 11, 2008 · In 1982, Paul Saginaw and Ari Weinzweig opened Zingerman's Deli in Ann Arbor, Mich. After 26 years, they have built an empire called Zingerman's Community of Businesses that Inc. magazine called "The Coolest Small Company in America." On Friday, Oprah Winfrey rated a sandwich from Zingerman's an amazing 11 out of 5.

This is one of the best things to come out of Michigan! Definitely worth the trip.

Report to the ProQuest Academic Advisory Board

Meeting with the ProQuest Academic Advisory Board today. As part of the meeting, each of the board members are supposed to come up with a 5-10 minute presentation on the state of affairs in the library world. I am hoping to expand on many of these themes, but here are the slides.

I will talk about this more later (once I am done with my performance evaluations...ugh). But I think it is critical that we do things that are amazing! I know budgets are tight, but this is a goal and a mission that is so critical for libraries to be a school's "competitive advantage."

I will write more later.

Innovative Interfaces Academic Library Directors Symposium

For the Innovative Academic Library Directors Symposium, I appeared on the following panel discussion:

The ILS and Discovery-to-Delivery: An Innovative panel of senior managers providing insights into how Innovative's current product lines and development plans provide opportunities for libraries to enhance their user's discovery experience.

Panelists include:
Neil Block, VP Worldwide Sales (Innovative)
Corey Seeman, Kresge Business Administration Library, University of Michigan

This is the presentation topic I came up with: "The ILS and Discovery-to-Delivery: Late Night Thoughts on Silos, Scope, Sodoku and Simplicity"

Really do not have an abstract, but if I did, it would be about how we can promote creativity in the library and use our ILS (catalog) in ways that allow us to easily extend our reach to the patrons. I will try to expand on this theme later.
