a lithograph among the mss!
Last week i discovered a lithograph in our Islamic Manuscripts Collection! This book likely hails from Iran and the date in the colophon reads "الاربعاء تاسع شهر ذي الحجة الحرام سنة 1314" i.e., 11 May 1897. it's been a delight to better acquaint myself with the ragingly successful lithographic printing work that coexisted alongside traditional manuscript production in Iran and India during the 19th century and early 20th century. Shcheglova's paper is an excellent introduction:
O.P. Scheglova, 'Lithograph versions of Persian manuscripts of Indian manufacture in the nineteenth century', in Manuscripta Orientalia 5/1 (1999), pp. 12-22
a digital copy is conveniently available for download from the Islamic manuscripts reference library on the Islamic manuscripts site which Dr. Jan Just Witkam moderates...
