Conclusion

As you can see, there are many themes presented in a Broadway musical and the themes are resonated in the songs presented in the musicals. The themes that readily appear in the musical are timeless in a sense that they occur universally, which often makes the musicals a hit. From the popular Broadway musicals that I have discussed love, friendship, hope, and freedom are some of the more prevalent themes that are displayed. These themes are popular because they are part of our culture and are culturally defined by society.

The themes are the key element in bringing people together to form a musical community. The musical community created by Broadway musicals is one that brings people together through the connection between the audience and the musical because the audience can directly associate with the story being told. The music in the musical is the mediator, since it enhances the experience by priming the audience to feel the emotions in the musical surrounding the specific themes presented. An atmosphere is created with the music that incorporates popular culture of the time to influence the audience. Popular culture controls the musical soundscape produced songs in the musicals. The songs are often catchy tunes with a pleasant melody that communicates to the viewer. The people brought together in the musical community of musicals are able to relate to the world established by the musicals in which the world is one that is expressed through song.

In the end, the musical community of Broadway musicals fits in with other musical communities in a way that it brings people together surrounding their interests and allows them freedom or expression through music.

Wicked

The source for the picture: http://www.s177422185.websitehome.co.uk/Data/101107/1salesbrobroadwaykings/cdocumentsandsettingshp_administratormydocumentsmypicturesnewwicked.jpg

The musical Wicked first opened on October 30, 2003. I actually got to see this musical in Chicago at the Oriental Theatre. Anyways, Wicked is supposed to be a story that takes place before the Wizard of Oz. There are two women named Elphaba (wicked witch) and Galinda (good witch), who are able to look past their differences and become good friends. In the end, they had to part ways in which Elphaba becomes the bad witch and Galinda is the good witch.

The theme prevalent in the musical is friendship. The song "What is This Feeling" is about Elphaba and Galinda getting to know one another and all the things that they loath about each other, but this only is the start of their friendship. They end up becoming great friends. "Defying Gravity" discusses the two working together as friends on a team.

Mamma Mia

The source for the picture: http://graphicslib.viator.com/graphicslib/3242/SITours/mamma-mia-on-broadway-in-new-york-city-1.jpg

Mamma Mia had it's first show on March 23, 1999. The musical is about a girl named Sophie who is about to get married, but wants her father to be at her wedding. She doesn't know who her father is but on her search through her mother Donna's diary she finds out that there are 3 men who could be her father. She decides to invite them all to her to town to find out which on is really her father.

The themes presented are of love. Love is present because of Sophie's wedding and the story about her mother's love affairs that occurred in her younger years one summer. Which is why all of the songs in the musical talk about love and being in love.

Phantom of the Opera

Phantom of the Opera opened on January 26, 1988. It is about a girl named Christine who sings at the opera, but feels trapped because of "the facially disfigured composer hiding in the bowels of the Paris Opera" (Sheward, 302). She has to decide between the Phantom or Raoul to love, but ends up picking Raoul.

This musical displays the theme of freedom and love. Christine sings how she wants to be free because she feels like a prisoner of the the phantom of the opera house. Although she wants freedom she often sings of the the love that she has and how the phantom is an musical angel sent by her father who past away when she was a child ( In the song "Angel of Music").

The source for the picture: http://images4.thomann.de/pics/prod/164516.jpg

The musical Les Misérables opened on March 12, 1987. It is "Hugo's epic tale of the relentless pursuit of the saintly Jean Valjean by the intractable officer Javert" (Sheward, 297). It is a very long musical with a main story and a few mini stories involved also. The main story is about Valjean was a man who went to jail because he stole some bread to feed his family. He ends up paying his time in jail, but when he returns to society he is shunned by the people because of his criminal record. After many years and under a new name Valjean redeems himself by becoming a successful factory owner. There is a mini story of the love between a girl named Cosette and Marius.

The themes in this play are redemption and love. Throughout the play Valjean is working to redeem himself by doing the right things and no longer stealing from others. In the song "What Have I Done" Valjean sings about his wrong doings and how he is going to try to change his ways to be a better person. On his journey of redemption he helps a girl name Cosette, who happens to be in love with a man named Marius. The songs about love talk about the love between Cosette and Marius.

Annie

Source for Picture: http://www.playbill.com/images/photos/annie.jpg

The musical Annie made its debut on April 21, 1977. It about a cute orphan named Annie who hopes to someday find her real parents. She lives a tough life in an orphanage with other children who hope to get adopted someday because all they ever do is clean, do chores, not have enough to eat, and has nobody to love or care for them.

The themes presented are hope and living a tough life. The hope talks about that there is always a tomorrow or a possibility that things can get better and dreams will come true. The tough life theme comes from the songs that talk about the scarcity of food and how the horrible living conditions are in the city.

Chicago

Source for the picture: http://www.celebrityseats.com/pic/event-pic158.jpg

Chicago first appearance was June 3, 1975. "The musical is based on Maurine Watkin's 1926 play about a showgirl who murders her lover and, thanks to the wiles of her attorney, gets off" (Sheward, 236). The woman's name is Roxy Hart and she commits a murder, which she happens to get away with. Her good fortune and luck leads her to accomplish fame.

The theme is fame and fortune for the musical Chicago. The songs that surround the theme of fame talk about what it will be like to be famous and living the life of fame. The life of a celebrity is described to be glamourous, fun, and well known. The songs of fortune explain the luck that people have in their lives. It is mainly about the chances that people have in life whether it's good or bad, just depends on your fortune.

In the movie version of Chicago, there were some some songs that were taken out that appeared in the original Broadway musical. Those songs are "I Know a Girl" and "A Little Bit of Good" were eliminated when the movie version of the musical was produced.

Grease

Source for picture: http://www.flickr.com/photos/53942994@N00/3086680080/

Grease opened on February 14, 1972. Grease is about two high school teens named Sandy and Danny who happen to fall in love over the summer. The two didn't think that they would ever see each other again, until school started and they ran into one another at school. The whole musical revolves around the love between Sandy and Danny.

The main theme of this musical is love. The songs that I have the links to down below are all songs surrounding the theme of love. The song "Summer Nights" talks about falling in love over the summer. "Hopelessly Devoted to You" and "Your the One That I Want" are songs that have been added to the movie version of the musical. So, there have been some additions to the movie versions of Broadway musicals. "Hopelessly Devoted to You" is when Sandy sings about hopelessly falling head-over heels for Danny. Then there's "Those Magic Changes" a song that describes the way the heart changes when you fall in love. As one can see love is prevalent in the musical Grease.

The Sound of Music

Source of Picture: http://thefedorachronicles.com/hollywood/Movies/sound_of_music.jpg

The Sound of Music first appeared on Broadway on November 16, 1959. The musical takes place in Austria. It is about a woman named Maria, who is a nun that "becomes a governess to the lonely children of Captain Von Trapp" (Sheward, 158). As a governess, Maria changes the spirits of the children through teaching them music. Later on, the Captain and Maria fall in love and they get married.

The themes that are displayed are dreams and love. Maria is dreaming about climbing mountains and being free, which she feels is missing from her life as a nun. In the song "I Have Cofidence", Maria is sing about what her life would be like and about having confidence in herself for the children and the captain because she loves them. The song "My Favorite Things" explains that if you think about the things that you love, it always makes you feel better.

West Side Story

Source for the picture: http://www.myparkmag.co.uk/images/west-side-story.jpg

West Side Story first appeared on September 26, 1957 (Sheward, 143). West side story is a musical about 2 rival gangs known as the Jets and Sharks who are fighting to claim a piece of territory in New York. It is kind of a modern take on Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet where "Shakespeare's star-crossed lovers became Polish-American Tony and Puerto Rican-born Maria, whose romance sets off a deadly confrontation between the two bands of youths" (Sheward, 143). Tony is from the Jets gang and Maria is the sister of Riff, who is the leader of the gang known as the Sharks. That is why the theme of forbidden love is the main focus of the musical.

The theme of forbidden love is expressed in a number of the songs. The song "A Boy Like That" says that Maria shouldn't love Tony because he will kill her brother because they belong to different gangs, who happen to be rivals. The song "Somewhere" is a song with Maria and Tony singing that some place they will be able to be together. The song "Maria" is where Tony sings about how in love he is with Maria.

My Fair Lady

Source for the Picture: http://www.slender.at/DVD/Filme/M/M-Dateien/My%20Fair%20Lady.jpg

The Musical: My Fair Lady first debuted on March 15th, 1956. From the book: "It's a Hit!" By David Sheward - My Fair Lady is a "story of an arrogant phonetics expert transforming a Cockney flower-seller into a lady by changing her speech" (Sheward, 137). The arrogant phonetics expert is a man named Henry Higgins and the lady is named Eliza.

A theme presented in the musical is respect. Respect is what drives the story being told in the musical because it's the idea that people speak differently depending on their social economic status in society. Which is why Higgins is running a experiment to see if he can change Eliza from low social status to high status by training her how to speak. Another theme that is presented is friendship because through the whole process of the training Higgins and Eliza become friends. Their friendship grows and develops throughout the show. In the end, Eliza becomes a lady and has earned the respect from people, especially Higgins.

Basics of Broadway Musicals

source for picture:http://www.sarahomestay.com/images/photos/broadway.jpg

From the book: "Broadway Stories" By Marty Bell - "Broadway has primarily become the home base for musicals, the place where a show comes to establish its credentials so it can then tour the United States and beyond" (p. xi). So, Broadway musicals begin in New York and with success and popularity of the musical, it makes a journey through tours across the country. Broadway is a community that lies in New York City. Broadway Musicals are shows that tells a story through the elements of: singing, music, choreographed dances, and dialogue. The elements intertwine with one another to reveal a story.

"Unlike the other media, which can unveil a new work all over the country at one time, a show can only be launched in one city" (Bell, 178). So the opinion of critics has an important role in the launch of a musical, but I think that the success of the musical all depends on how close an audience is able to relate to the themes presented in the show. Because the more that an audience can relate to allows will make them want to talk about it more and through word of mouth of others many will attend the show.

In the past, tourists of New York or the elite group of New York would be the ones that broadway musicals appealed to because of the costs of attending a show. Now a days Broadway musicals are accessible to everyone who is interested in watching the show. There are many theaters that offer the Broadway musicals as a show for people to attend. Also, many of the popular Broadway musical hits have been turned into movies, which can be easily accessed and watched in the comfort of one's own home. In addition to the movies of the musicals, the songs are widely circulated on CD's and easily accessible on the web.
