Interested in Becoming a Graduate Student Instructor
Hey there, So many people are interested in becoming a graduate student instructor (GSI aka TA) to help finance their SI career. Wellll, this is totally possible. However, for Master's students it can be a little difficult to get GSI positions for SI classes. Most GSI posts are reserved for PhD students. Prof. Rob Frost does teach a course titled Into to Information Studies for undergrads that previous Master's students have taught in the past.
Also U of M is starting an undergraduate informatics program (EXCITING!!). The program is a joining of the College of Engineering, Literature, Science, & the Arts and the School of Information! I don't know all the details but I imagine this is another opportunity for you to tap into.
I've never been a GSI but I have heard it can be demanding and includes at least 20 hours of work or more. Even still, the benefits can be well worth it. Generally a GSI position can cover full or partial tuition, health care, sick leave and possibly a stipend.
That said, if you are interested in seeking out GSI positions here are some tips:
- 1. Often SI students receive GSI positions in other schools. If you received a previous degree (Bachelors or other) or have significant work experience in another area, then look for positions in a corresponding department.
2. Positions are not often posted on job sites so start networking...now!
- Email professors you're interested in working for
- Browse department websites.
- Speak with Joanna or Kelly in our career services department for leads and advice.
- Become a member of other grad student organizations. Often they send announcements out to there listserv or the members have contacts they can pass on to you. Browse student orgs using MaizePages.
- Check Rackham's website for more information, tips on applying and any postings.

Hope this helps :) Good luck!
