Replacement Apple Trackpad Driver

A replacement driver for the MacBook Pro trackpad,SideTrack,
offers some useful features.

The driver costs $15 for use beyond the trial period, though. Not a bad price, but I wouldn't gain much from it now.

I'm already used to the way the driver from Apple accomplishes most of these tasks. I don't think I would like to have special areas of the trackpad set aside for scrolling, since that would reduce the functional size of the trackpad.

The only thing that's tempting me is the ability to map taps in the corner of the trackpad to special button clicks. I would give up a corner or two for cmd-click and shift-click.

OpenOffice For Mac OS X Soon

A colleague pointed out to me that OpenOffice will be available for Mac OS X soon, porting: OpenOffice.org for Mac OS X : Download Aqua.

Actually, OpenOffice has been available for OSX under the name NeoOffice for over a year. But that is a kind of repackaged OpenOffice with enhancements to make it work with OSX. It will be exciting to have a version of the software that will be closer to the core application.

Additional information is available here:

Change Mac OS X Default Screenshot Format

This looks useful. The hint is old, I wonder if it works with newer versions of the OS.

MacBook Air Smells Bad

Yesterday at Macworld 2008, Apple announced their newest model of notebook computer, the MacBook Air. It falls short of being a complete product in a number of ways:

Don't misunderstand me, though. Apple did get a few things right with the MacBook Air:

What I would really like Apple to release is an iPod Touch that I can easily install or write applications for. If I had one, I would put a terminal application (probably iTerm, which is much better than Terminal.app) and ssh on it so I can access servers. (Hey, Apple! Give us a new Newton!) Or else, give us a tablet computer with touch sensitive screen, but don't strip out all the nice feature we already have on our MacBook Pros!
